- ‘What is Bitcoin’ was the most searched term in the ‘What is..?’ Category for Google in 2018
- Blockchain developer was also declared as the top emerging career by LinkedIn
As 2018 comes to a close, Google has released its annual ‘most searched’ list that shows what search terms were most popular this year. The list features everything from world events to celebrities and this year has an interesting list-topper: Bitcoin.
In the category for the ‘what is’ searches for the year, ‘What is Bitcoin?’ comes in at number one.
The genie is out of the bottle
There are a number of reasons why this search term was at the top of the list. First, bitcoin is by far the world’s most popular cryptocurrency and thus, the one that most people have been exposed to.
Another reason would be Bitcoin’s increased use in everyday life. It is now being accepted as a form of tax payment in Ohio and more private establishments are accepting it as a medium of exchange.
As a result, more people want to know more about it as it finds its way into their lives which drives web bitcoin-related web searches.
As we move into a more crypto-centric future, one can expect this trend to continue.
Crypto-work
Web searches aren’t the only thing that has been on the increase for crypto.
According to job search site LinkedIn, Blockchain developer is the number 1 emerging job on the platform.
Searches for Blockchain developers have increased 33-fold according to the platform.
This comes only a few weeks after it was reported that Blockchain engineers are among the highest-paid in the field.
A number of academic institutions are now offering blockchain courses to help fill the demand that is growing for blockchain expertise and that demand is only bound to rise as the industry grows.
“It’s no surprise that we’re seeing an explosion of machine learning roles and continuing growth of data science roles. In fact, we started to see glimmers of this in last year’s report, however, both fields are starting to see more specialized roles emerge,” Guy Berger, LinkedIn’s chief economist, said “It also may not shock you that Blockchain Developer is topping the list following this year’s surge in interest around blockchain and cryptocurrency.”
