- The IOTA Foundation has invited global blockchain developers to create smart city solutions using the IOTA Tangle
- Developers will be responsible for solving inter-city challenges presented by various corporate entities, including Group Renault
- The contest is hosted by Hackster.io and the winner stands to win over $10,000 in prizes.
IOTA, focused on developing the next generation of protocols for the Internet of Things, has joined forces with numerous highly reputed organizations including Groupe Renault, ENGIELab CRIGEN, VEOLIA Birdzand others, to launch a Smart City global hackathon.
IOTA Fostering More Efficient City Management
The IOTA Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the IOTA project, which is aimed at creating permissionless ecosystems through DLT, has joined forces with other forward-thinking firms to launch a global smart city hackathon for crypto developers.
For the uninitiated, a smart city is simply an urban area that utilizes data collection sensors to supply highly accurate information which is used to manage the region’s assets and resources in an efficient manner.
Therefore, the organization is calling on developers across the globe to work individually or as a team to use the IOTA Tangle technology in creating IoT/M2M (Machine-to-Machine) innovative solutions for smart cities in order to stand a chance of winning $10,000 in prizes.
IOT Technology to Reduce Congestion in Urban Areas
Specifically, the IoT/M2M solutions, help to reduce congestion in the urban areas, by reducing the time, risk, and cost required to connect systems in a city, and also create efficient and cost-effective municipal services and more.
The Tangle is a feeless blockchain alternative network which allows micropayments to be transferred between machines.
The technology also enables data to be securely transferred and as such, it plays a crucial role in the development of smart cities.
Consequently, interested participants have been tasked with the duty of developing open source solutions and they will be merged to a smart city challenge as well as initiatives whose theme centralizes on smart mobility, smart energy, smart buildings, and smart districts.
Judges for the Smart City Development Competition
Some of the competition’s judges will be representatives from industries like Groupe Renault, Birdz, Sopra Steria, and ENGIE Lab CRIGEN.
Alexandre EICH-GOZZI, Global Blockchain Practice Leader, Sopra Steria, one of the corporate sponsors of the event reiterated that:
“We have the conviction that IOT and DLT are two complementary technologies and that smart cities and DLT will be strongly intertwined in the future.”
The event which is hosted by Hackster.io began on February 25 and will run till April 6, 2019, where participants have until then to develop their projects, and on April 13, a winner will be announced via a press release.
On February 8, 2019, Blockchain Reporter informed that Lidbot already uses the IOTA Tangle platform to create a smart waste management system.
At press time the price of IOTA (MIOTA) sits at $0.28, with a market cap of just under $800 million, as seen on CoinMarketCap.
