- Linux Foundation plans to create Project Alvarium in partnership with IOTA and leading industry players
- The project is set to facilitate intrinsic trust in data and applications across diverse systems
- Alvarium will be seeded by code from Dell and has support from Arm, IBM, MobiledgeX, OSIsoft, Unisys, and many others
On October 28, 2019, The IOTA Foundation revealed that its technology would be used as a key enabler for Project Alvarium, an open-source venture being formed under the Linux Foundation.
The Alvarium project will be focused on structuring the concept of a Data Confidence Fabric (DCF) to establish the provenance of data coming from multiple sources and delivering data to applications with quantifiable confidence.
According to an announcement by the Linux Foundation, the project will be seeded by code from Dell Technologies and utilize support from other industry leaders including Arm, IBM, MobiledgeX, OSIsoft, Unisys, and others.
IOTA co-founder Dominik Schiener stated:
“Data Confidence Fabrics address three inherent and often conflicting challenges within the massive debate over data – how to keep control in the hands of the owner, how to allow for its public use and which data to trust.”
IOTA is working to build distributed ledger technologies (DLT) for the Internet of Things (IoT), a goal Dell is also pursuing. DLT records and transmits data generated by smart devices, forming the fundamental layer for IoT.
The DCF will be built on a DLT that IOTA will help develop.
What You Should Know About Project Alvarium
Project Alvarium will help nurture a community to collaborate on the standard open-source framework that binds together the various components constituting trust fabrics. It will also define the algorithms that drive confidence scores as data flows through any given application.
Explaining how Alvarium will work to create and unify trust insertion technologies, Arpit Joshipura, the general manager, Networking, Edge and IoT at the Linux Foundation noted:
“As edge computing becomes more pervasive, a comprehensive open-source framework that delivers measurable confidence across industries and across stacks is imperative. We welcome Project Alvarium to the Linux Foundation family of projects.”
The project will merge systems from across the industry, building a mutual platform that enables trust from the point of data generation to an operational platform.
It consists of multiple components that give essential trust to data within every sector, including database integration, process control, operations, and supply chain.
Significance of the Project in the Blockchain Development
According to David Sønstebø, Co-founder, IOTA Foundation, Alvarium is coming at an integral time when the intersection of control over data, transparency, and privacy is a key concern for just about every organization and individual.
Presently, data used for decision making by numerous organizations comes from multiple sources containing info that exists in various formats, with little data on its precision, origin or immutability.
With this newly introduced DCF, trust is inserted into the data path through a combination of technologies.
