- After failing presidential race in 1998 and 2008, Biden has announced that he will be running for the presidency in the 2020 US elections
- President Donald Trump has dismissed Biden’s presidential bid terming it as a “Dream.”
- Biden has described himself as an “Obama-Biden Democrat” who is ready to restore democracy in the country as well as the US reputation across the world
Former Vice President Joe Biden has announced that he will be running for the presidency for a third time in 2020. This announcement has come after a backdrop of months of deliberation between him and his campaign managers and family.
Biden’s Announcement
Through a campaign video which announced his bid for the presidency, Biden rebuked the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017 and President Donald Trump’s aftermath statement. He termed Trump’s statement as hateful with a “moral equivalence between those spreading hate and those with the courage to stand against it.”
Biden views the 2020 US presidential race as a “battle for the soul of this nation” stating that America is at stake because of a weakened democracy coupled with disoriented core values.
Following his announcement, Biden has a tight schedule. He is set to attend a fundraiser in Philadelphia before appearing on ABC’s “The View” for his first television interview. On Monday, he is also expected to hold his first official event in Pittsburgh, followed by a swing through early voting states like Lowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. On May 18, he is set to host a rally in Philadelphia where he will launch his vision for America which is to “unify America with respect leadership on the world stage.”
Heavy competition from progressive Democrats
The 2020 American presidential race is overcrowded with close to twenty contestants. Biden now at 76 years is doing well with most recent polls, but competition is fierce, with many fellow corporate candidates and a few, strong progressive candidates. Biden has no easy task in front of him as he first needs to battle it out with senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Trump has laughed off Biden’s presidential dream terming it as “dream.”
Biden has barely launched his vision for America but has already received endorsements from fellow establishment leaders including Democratic Sens, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Chris Coons of Delaware. He confessed that it was a tough decision to run for the 2020 US presidential race as he first had to seek approval from his family then navigate past various hurdles including fundraising, digital strategy, assembling a diverse campaign team as well as ensuring that there is an appeal for a Biden run. He announced that his campaign team is now set to propel him to the White House come 2020.
