In a recent development, the popular Web3 social network app, Damus, has been notified by Apple that it is at risk of being removed from the App Store due to a violation of the App Store Review Guidelines.
The app, which empowers content creators and embraces lightning integration, received a warning from Apple stating that its mechanism for users to send “tips” associated with receiving digital content is in breach of guideline 3.1.1 – Business – Payments – In-App Purchase.
Concerns Over Apple’s Decision and Implications for Financial Freedom
Damus, known for its commitment to decentralized social networks and financial freedom, expressed its surprise and concern over Apple’s decision.
In a tweet, the charged Web3 social network highlighted the timing of the notification, which came just before their scheduled talk at the Oslo Freedom Forum, where they planned to discuss the role of decentralized social networks with lightning integration in bringing financial independence to the masses.
The company deemed Apple’s action as “pretty sus” and raised questions about the ability to transact freely peer-to-peer on the platform. According to the notification from the App Review team, Damus has been given a 14-day period to submit an update that complies with the App Store Review Guidelines.
Failure to do so within the given timeframe would result in the app’s removal from sale. In addition, if the app remains non-compliant even after the deadline, it will be unavailable for testing through TestFlight, and all public TestFlight links will become inactive.
The potential removal of Damus from the App Store has sparked concerns within the crypto community, particularly among apps integrating lightning technology. Notably, this move by Apple could have far-reaching implications for the ecosystem, as it raises questions about the freedom to conduct peer-to-peer transactions on their platform.
It is seen as a significant moment that could impact the future of apps with lightning integration and the adoption of decentralized social networks.
As of now, Damus and its team are evaluating their options and determining the necessary steps to ensure compliance with Apple’s guidelines. The outcome of this situation will not only affect Damus but also serve as a precedent for other apps embracing lightning integration and the broader Web3 community.
