Bitcoin is holding $80,000, Ethereum is steady near $2,330, and the week’s institutional story is not a treasury buy but a custody decision at America’s oldest bank. BNY, The Bank of New York Mellon, said on October 27 that its Digital Asset Custody platform now supports XRP and RLUSD directly, building on its role as reserve custodian for Ripple’s stablecoin. The announcement landed as BTC traded at $80,171 and XRP at $1.31 at the 15:10 UTC print, according to CoinGecko data. For an investor asking what to buy now, the answer splits three ways: Bitcoin as the macro anchor, Ethereum as the application layer, and XRP as the asset with a concrete, dated institutional catalyst — detailed in Ripple’s official announcement.
Bitcoin Holds $80,000 as the Macro Anchor
Bitcoin changed hands at $80,171 at the 15:10 UTC print, down 0.29% over 24 hours and 2.18% over seven days, with a market capitalization of $1.61 trillion and a 59.4% share of the total crypto market, per CoinGecko. The level is not a technical trigger so much as a statement of the regime: through a week of mixed macro headlines, the reserve asset has refused to give up the $80,000 shelf it reclaimed in October.
For a long-horizon allocator, that stability is the argument. Bitcoin’s case does not rest on any single announcement this week. It rests on structure — a fixed 21-million supply and the deepest liquidity in the asset class. A position in Bitcoin is the least aggressive way to stay long the sector, and the long-run price debate is really a debate about how much of global savings migrates toward that fixed supply.
Ethereum Steadies Near $2,330
Ether printed $2,328.30 at 15:10 UTC, up 0.01% on the day and down 3.19% over seven days, with a market capitalization near $284.3 billion and a 10.5% share of the total market. There is no single catalyst behind the sideways week; the network’s staking yield and its dominance of decentralized finance activity continue to do the quiet work of keeping ETH bid while speculative capital rotates elsewhere.
Treat Ethereum as the application layer of the allocation — the asset one owns for what runs on it, from lending markets to stablecoin flows to rollup settlement — rather than for a discrete price catalyst this week. That makes it the middle choice: less downside than a single-catalyst altcoin, less upside than an institutional story that is still being priced.
BNY Adds XRP and RLUSD to Its Custody Platform
The catalyst belongs to XRP. BNY now supports XRP, the native asset of the XRP Ledger, and RLUSD on its Digital Asset Custody platform, letting eligible clients safekeep, hold and transfer the assets under the bank’s governance, controls and resiliency framework. The move builds on BNY’s existing role as reserve custodian for RLUSD and its custody relationship with Ripple Prime.
“We’re moving past the initial issuance of assets onchain — now, it’s all about making these tokenized assets usable for payments and collateral across financial markets,” said Monica Long, President of Ripple. “With BNY, we’re connecting the necessary components of financial infrastructure on the XRP Ledger so institutions can move from holding digital assets to using them within capital markets and trade finance seamlessly.”
BNY framed the deal as infrastructure, not a trade. “Future market infrastructure will deliver connectivity across payments, liquidity, collateral and securities, driven by architected bridges between traditional scaled systems and always-on blockchain technology,” said Carolyn Weinberg, Chief Innovation and Market Transformation Officer at BNY. The bank also intends to let its clients mint and redeem RLUSD directly, and to explore tokenized trade finance on the XRPL with C2FO, a working-capital platform.
On the trade finance side, the first step is a supply chain finance initiative with C2FO. “Working with Ripple and BNY and leveraging XRPL, we are excited to explore how a new model for financing approved receivables has the potential to broaden access to capital while preserving the relationships and experience our customers already trust,” said Ragui Selwanes, President and COO Americas at C2FO.
RLUSD has grown to roughly $2.5 billion in market capitalization, and the XRP Ledger has processed more than 4.6 billion transactions with settlement in roughly three to five seconds, Ripple said. The custody move follows Standard Chartered’s earlier launch of RLUSD custody on the same ledger.
The Market-Cap Math
The discipline in an institutional catalyst is to size what is actually being re-rated. XRP’s $83.3 billion market capitalization is about 5.2% of Bitcoin’s $1.61 trillion and roughly 3.1% of the $2.70 trillion total crypto market, per CoinGecko. The sharper figure sits on BNY’s side of the table: the bank oversees $63.4 trillion in assets under custody or administration — roughly 23 times the entire crypto market capitalization. One custody door opening does not move $63.4 trillion into XRP, but it is the scale of the addressable system the announcement is pointed at.
None of this is a forecast. A move that lifted XRP to 10% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization — about $161 billion — would imply roughly a 1.9x from here. That is the arithmetic a buyer should hold in mind, not a target.
What the Announcement Does Not Yet Change
The sober reading matters. Custody is infrastructure, not demand: BNY now safekeeps XRP and RLUSD for eligible clients, but the announcement does not say those clients are buying XRP, does not set a timeline for the tokenized trade finance work with C2FO, and describes the supply-chain finance initiative as an exploration subject to client requirements. A custody expansion can support institutional use over time without changing spot flows this week; XRP’s 1.04% 24-hour move at the 15:10 UTC print is consistent with a market that has not yet priced a liquidity event.
What the market is buying is a path — the possibility that a 240-year-old custody bank is the bridge that turns Ripple’s assets from something held into something used. Whether that path widens into measurable demand is the open question that separates the thesis from the trade.
