Bitcoin is holding $81,000 while the quiet standout in the top ten is BNB, the only major token still green over seven days, and it has a dated catalyst behind it: BNB Chain activated the Jenner hard fork on its testnet today, October 28. BNB traded at $751.18 at the 10:00 UTC print, up 2.22% over 24 hours and 0.43% over seven days, with a market capitalization near $98.8 billion, according to CoinGecko. For a buyer asking what is actually changing, the answer is in the chain’s own upgrade guide: a reserved lane for payments, a native compliant-asset standard, and millisecond timestamps for smart contracts.
The upgrade is testnet-only for now, and BNB Chain has not dated its mainnet rollout. The catalyst is real but staged — which is exactly why the price reaction has been steady rather than explosive.
Bitcoin Holds $81,000 as the Macro Anchor
Bitcoin changed hands at $81,391 at the 10:00 UTC print, up 2.27% over 24 hours and down 1.98% over seven days, with a market capitalization near $1.64 trillion, per CoinGecko. The level is the anchor of the allocation rather than the trade: through a week of mixed macro headlines, the reserve asset has kept the $81,000 shelf it reclaimed, and it still carries roughly 59% of the total crypto market.
For a long-horizon buyer, that is the argument for Bitcoin — it is the least aggressive way to stay long the sector, and its long-run price debate is really a debate about how much global savings migrates toward a fixed 21-million supply.
The Jenner Hard Fork: Payments, Compliance, and Millisecond Timestamps
The catalyst belongs to BNB. The Jenner hard fork activates on the BNB Smart Chain testnet on October 28, and BNB Chain described the change in precise terms. “Jenner is scheduled for BSC testnet on October 28, 2026. Confirmed mainnet timing will be announced separately,” the upgrade guide states.
The centerpiece is BEP-703, which creates a Payment Lane. “Payment Lane, which reserves 5% of each block’s gas capacity for qualifying payment transactions by default. Governance can adjust that share up to a protocol maximum of 10%,” BNB Chain wrote. The design means plain BNB transfers to contract-free accounts — and, later, transactions to governance-approved payment contracts — get a reserved slice of every block, so a congested network cannot price out basic payments.
Two more changes round out the upgrade. BEP-702 installs the Compliant Asset Standard, or CAS20, a native token type for stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets that bakes in transfer policies, allowlists and blocklists, pausing, and separate mint, burn, and seizure roles. BEP-706 adds a precompile at address 0x70 that returns block timestamps in milliseconds, which BNB Chain said is aimed at timing-sensitive logic like quote expiry and auction cutoffs. “The change exposes finer timing precision already present in block headers. It does not change block speed or provide stronger timing guarantees than the existing validator-supplied block timestamp,” the guide notes.
The Market-Cap Math
The discipline with a chain-upgrade story is to size what is actually being re-rated. BNB’s $98.8 billion market capitalization is about 6.0% of Bitcoin’s $1.64 trillion. A move that lifted BNB to 10% of Bitcoin’s market cap — roughly $164 billion — would imply a price near $1,246, or about 1.66x from the $751 print. That is arithmetic to hold in mind, not a target: it frames how much headroom a payment-and-compliance re-rating implies if the features land on mainnet and actually route volume through the lane.
The sharper figure is on the payment side. BNB Smart Chain processes the most daily transactions of any Layer 1, and a 5% reserved gas lane is a structural answer to a specific problem — during congestion, a stablecoin transfer or an exchange withdrawal bids against arbitrage bots and loses. By defaulting 5% of block space to plain BNB payments, Jenner is aimed at making payments reliable when the network is busy, which is the property a payments chain is supposed to have.
What Jenner Does Not Change Yet
The sober reading keeps the move in proportion. Jenner is a testnet activation, not a mainnet launch: BNB Chain said confirmed mainnet timing will come separately, and third-party tracking points to a late-November target that is not yet official. CAS20 token creation is switched off at the fork — a governance-appointed administrator must activate it later — so the compliant-asset standard is code on the network, not a live token standard yet. And the Payment Lane’s eligible-contract list starts empty, so stablecoins do not qualify until governance adds them.
None of this makes the upgrade insignificant. A chain that wants to carry stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, and everyday payments is laying the rails before the volume arrives. BNB’s 2.22% daily move — steady, not speculative — is consistent with a market treating the fork as a step in a longer build-out, the same read it applied to BNB Chain’s Pasteur hard fork and the Fermi upgrade before it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BNB Chain Jenner hard fork?
Jenner is a BNB Smart Chain upgrade that activates on the testnet on October 28, 2026. It adds a Payment Lane reserving 5% of block gas for eligible payments, the CAS20 compliant-asset standard for stablecoins and tokenized assets, and a millisecond timestamp precompile. Mainnet timing has not been announced.
What is BNB’s price today?
BNB traded at $751.18 at the 10:00 UTC print on October 28, up 2.22% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization near $98.8 billion, per CoinGecko.
What does the Payment Lane do?
It reserves 5% of each block’s gas capacity by default for eligible payment transactions — plain BNB transfers to contract-free accounts, plus governance-listed payment contracts. Governance can raise the share to a maximum of 10%. It does not change fees or transaction ordering.
When does Jenner reach mainnet?
BNB Chain has not confirmed a mainnet date, saying only that timing will be announced separately. Third-party tracking points to a late-November 2026 target that is not yet official.
Is CAS20 live now?
No. Jenner installs the CAS20 code, but token creation and policy-registry updates require separate activation by a governance-appointed administrator, and BNB Chain said availability will get its own announcement.
