Privacy assets are doing what the majors are not this week. Zcash (ZEC) is up 7.5% over the past 24 hours to $1,278.54, and Monero (XMR) has added about 3% to $639.51, while Bitcoin grinds back toward $78,000 and most of the rest of the top ten trades flat to slightly lower. The trigger is a date: Zcash’s ninth network upgrade, NU7, activates on November 5 at block 3,543,405, and traders are positioning ahead of it.
For a buyer who wants the most upside per dollar of fresh capital, the privacy sector is where the action sits. Zcash’s $21.8 billion market capitalization is roughly one-seventy-second of Bitcoin’s $1.57 trillion, which means a dollar of buying pressure moves the smaller asset far more than it moves the largest one. That arithmetic cuts both ways, and it is the central tension of this column.
Where the majors stand before the upgrade
As of 14:26 UTC on 4 November 2026, CoinGecko pegs Bitcoin at $78,272, up 1.4% over 24 hours after trading as low as $75,695 earlier in the session. Ethereum sits at $2,316, up 1.35%. XRP is flat at $1.28 and Solana is down 0.4% to $92.84. Against that backdrop, the two leading privacy coins are the outliers: Zcash at $1,278.54 after a 7.52% move, and Monero at $639.51, up 3.03%.
The recovery in Bitcoin matters for the broader tape. It reclaimed the $78,000 level after election-driven volatility pushed it toward $75,700, climbing back above $78,000 even as spot ETFs logged a third straight day of outflows. A market that is climbing without ETF support is leaning on spot buyers and, increasingly, on corporate treasuries that accumulate rather than trade.
The market-cap math behind a privacy-coin 2x
The numbers explain why Zcash and Monero can move so hard. To double Bitcoin from $78,272 to $156,544, its market capitalization would need to rise by roughly $1.57 trillion, a capital inflow larger than the entire value of every other coin except Ethereum. To double Zcash from $1,278.54 to $2,557.08, its market cap only needs to climb from $21.8 billion to $43.5 billion, an inflow of about $21.8 billion. That is roughly 72 times less capital for the same percentage gain.
The same math applies to Monero. Its $12.0 billion market cap would need about $12 billion of new capital to double, next to Ethereum’s $283 billion and Solana’s $54.8 billion. Smaller is not safer, a thin market also falls faster, but it is the reason privacy coins lead when the narrative turns toward them.
NU7: what actually changes on November 5
Zcash’s upgrade is a technical event with a price-relevant edge. The mainnet height of 3,543,405 was locked on October 20, and activation is expected around November 5. The headline change is ZIP-218, which cuts target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, a threefold increase in block rate, while keeping daily issuance unchanged by reducing the subsidy per block. A faster network with unchanged supply is the kind of change traders read as an efficiency upgrade. The activation height is documented in ZIP 259.
The upgrade also disables version 4 transactions, shutting off spending from the legacy Sprout pool, and integrates the Network Sustainability Mechanism that coinholders voted on, preserving the halving schedule with reintroduction set for February 2031. For context on how that mechanism reshapes Zcash’s funding, see Zcash’s recent coverage.
“NU7 is proceeding!” wrote ebfull in the official NU7 timeline announcement, adding that “there is now unanimous agreement among the orgs and engineering teams throughout the Zcash ecosystem.” The same post was explicit about the limits of the upgrade: “New transaction formats do not appear in this network upgrade! The changes in this upgrade should not affect wallets in any significant way.”
That last point is the sobering one for anyone expecting a disruptive event. NU7 is infrastructure work, not a product launch. The price move ahead of it is positioning on a known date, not confirmation that anything has changed yet.
The 7.5% move is positioning, not delivery
It is worth being precise about the boundaries here. NU7 does not introduce a new transaction format, does not require users to migrate funds, and does not change Zcash’s shielded-transaction privacy model. Wallets should continue working without major changes. The faster block time improves confirmation speed, but it does not by itself create new demand for ZEC.
For an investor, that means the 7.5% move is largely anticipatory. If the activation passes without incident on November 5, the question becomes whether the faster cadence draws new usage, and that is a slower, harder story to verify than the price candle itself.
The case for Bitcoin instead
There is a counterargument worth holding alongside the privacy trade. Bitcoin is up against a structural bid that Zcash and Monero simply do not have: a growing list of publicly traded companies that buy and hold it as a treasury asset. That accumulation does not guarantee a rally, but it raises the cost of a sustained selloff.
For a buyer with a longer horizon, the honest framing is a choice between momentum that is already visible in the privacy coins and accumulation that is still building underneath Bitcoin. Zcash and Monero offer more upside per dollar if the privacy narrative keeps working; Bitcoin offers more liquidity and less single-project risk if the market turns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Zcash rising today?
Zcash is up about 7.5% to $1,278.54 as traders position ahead of the NU7 network upgrade, which activates on November 5 at block 3,543,405. The move is anticipatory: NU7 does not introduce new transaction formats or change wallets, so the rally reflects positioning on the upgrade date rather than a completed change.
What does the Zcash NU7 upgrade change?
NU7 cuts block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds under ZIP-218, disables version 4 (Sprout) transactions, and integrates the Network Sustainability Mechanism. Daily issuance is unchanged because the subsidy per block is reduced in proportion to the faster block rate.
Is Bitcoin a better buy than Zcash right now?
It depends on time horizon and risk tolerance. Zcash’s $21.8 billion market cap means a 2x requires roughly 72 times less new capital than Bitcoin’s $1.57 trillion, but it also carries more single-project risk. Bitcoin reclaimed $78,000 and has a structural bid from corporate treasuries that the privacy coins lack.
What would invalidate the Zcash privacy trade?
A failed or delayed NU7 activation, a broad risk-off move that hits smaller caps hardest, or a shift in the privacy narrative would all pressure the trade. A thin market means ZEC can fall as quickly as it rose if positioning unwinds.
Note: prices and market-capitalization figures are from CoinGecko as of 14:26 UTC on 4 November 2026 and change constantly.
