Bitcoin’s latest rally has left one of the market’s most instructive on-chain maps, the cost-basis distribution heatmap, flashing a clear warning: there’s surprisingly thin buyer support just above current prices. Glassnode’s recent post notes that the heatmap shows “thin support between $121K and $120K, with a key cluster near $117K where around 190K BTC were last acquired,” and that a pullback into that zone could “attract demand as recent buyers defend the level.”
The timing of that observation matters because Bitcoin is trading not far above those ranges. As of Tuesday, BTC was quoted in the low-to-mid $124k area after touching record highs above $125k over the weekend, a move driven largely by heavy flows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds and renewed institutional demand.
What the cost-basis heatmap shows, visually and plainly, is where recent cohorts of holders actually bought Bitcoin. Those horizontal bands of warmer color mark concentrations of supply that tend to act as support on dips or resistance on rallies. The current picture, Glassnode argues, leaves the immediate area just below spot with only a modest cushion, and a meaningful cluster centered near $117k that could become the battlefield if sellers pressure the market. In short, the market has pockets of strong conviction, but the nearest big defending line is a few thousand dollars lower than spot.
That structural vulnerability hasn’t stopped flows. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs reported another blockbuster day of inflows, with platforms registering roughly $1.1–$1.2 billion of net money on Monday, a level that has historically coincided with material price moves and, sometimes, with local tops. Analysts point out that ETF demand, along with macro tailwinds such as dollar weakness and broader risk-asset appetite, helped push Bitcoin into uncharted territory this month.

Technically, analysts are divided. Some technical desks see the breakout above prior highs as signalling further extension, with multi-week targets floated as high as the $150k–$160k band in bullish scenarios, while others caution that the speed and size of recent inflows make near-term consolidation likely, and that the $107k–$118k area would be critical to hold during any retracement. The cost-basis heatmap gives that caution a tangible anchor: if sellers force a re-test of the $117k cluster, the market will quickly reveal whether recent buyers step up or whether supply overwhelms demand.
For traders and longer-term holders alike, the immediate lesson is one of risk management: exuberant headlines about record prices are now matched by real, mappable patches of concentrated buying below the market. Those patches can provide solid support if defended, but their absence closer to spot means stops and position sizing matter more than usual. Market participants should watch ETF flow data and short-term volume spikes closely; the same flows that have been a tailwind can reverse and trigger fast price swings once liquidity thins.
In the coming days, the story will be decided by two competing forces: continued institutional demand channelled through ETFs and on-chain accumulation, and profit-taking or re-allocation that could probe the weak bands Glassnode has highlighted. If the $117k cluster holds and recent buyers defend their positions, the path higher looks clear. If it unravels, the heatmap suggests the next battle lines lie several thousand dollars lower, and traders will have to navigate that terrain without the thick cushion they’ve come to expect.
