BitGo and Jupiter have opened a validator that lets eligible institutions stake Solana (SOL) straight from their existing BitGo custody accounts, the two companies announced on October 28, 2026. The “Jupiter x BitGo” validator means a regulated custodian’s clients can delegate SOL and earn native staking rewards without moving the asset to an external staking provider or opening a second custody relationship, according to the BitGo announcement.
BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A., an OCC-regulated national trust bank, supplies the custody layer. Jupiter, the Solana swap and DeFi aggregator, runs the validator itself. The pairing targets a specific operational problem for institutional holders: native Solana staking has normally required delegating stake through a wallet or staking provider outside the custodian’s control, which forces a compliance team to weigh custody integrity against yield.
What Staking From Custody Changes
Native SOL staking runs through stake accounts. A holder delegates SOL to a validator, the stake activates at the start of the next epoch, and rewards compound into the stake account every epoch. An epoch runs roughly two to three days on Solana. Unstaking reverses the flow with a deactivation delay of about one epoch before the balance can be withdrawn, and the network caps how much stake can activate or deactivate in a single epoch at 25% of total active stake to guard against sudden swings in security.
The integration keeps that mechanism but moves where the stake sits. Instead of a client withdrawing SOL from BitGo and sending it to a provider, the delegation happens inside the existing custody account. “Staked SOL is delegated to the validator and is not transferred to Jupiter’s custody,” BitGo’s announcement states.
That distinction is the product. Staking without transferring assets removes the custody hand-off that stalls most institutional staking decisions during compliance review. The asset stays inside BitGo’s cold storage and its insurance program, which covers up to $250 million subject to the policy’s terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions.
“Most people know Jupiter for swaps, perps, and lending, but none of that works without a network that’s secure and fast underneath it,” said Kash Dhanda, Jupiter’s chief operating officer. “Running a validator is how we invest in that base layer, and partnering with BitGo brings institutional SOL into it on terms those institutions already trust.”
“Staking is an important part of how institutions manage their SOL holdings, and it needs to fit into their existing custody and approval processes,” said Abel Seow, managing director and head of APAC sales at BitGo. Jupiter framed the same idea on X as “Solana’s leading DeFi platform, meet the custodian institutions trust.”
The Numbers Behind Solana’s Staking Market
Solana is already one of the most staked major networks. As of October 28, Staking Rewards data put the staking ratio at 68.94%, with 438.58 million SOL staked, worth about $46.48 billion at a token price of $105.98. The reward rate sat at 4.89% annualized against a network inflation rate of 3.56%.
Two figures from that snapshot explain why a custody-staking product is aimed at institutions. First, the net yield: a 4.89% gross reward rate against 3.56% inflation leaves roughly 1.3 percentage points of real yield before validator commission, which averages about 3.75% across the network and trims the net figure further. Second, the addressable balance: with about 31% of SOL unstaked, roughly 197 million SOL, on the order of $20.9 billion at current prices, sits outside the staking system. That is the pool a custodian-led product is built to reach.
Rewards scale inversely with participation. As more SOL is staked, the same issuance is spread across more stakers, so per-token yield falls. The network runs one of the largest validator sets among major proof-of-stake chains, with more than 6,700 validators tracked by Staking Rewards and a benchmark commission of about 3.75%. The integration’s pitch is not that Solana staking is a high-yield trade. It is that the yield now fits inside custody operations institutions already run.
Where the Risk Sits
The yield is not guaranteed. BitGo states that rewards “vary based on network conditions, validator performance, and other factors.” Solana’s slashing mechanism is still under development and not actively enforced, so the nearer-term risk is opportunity cost from delegating to an underperforming validator. Jupiter operates the validator independently, and BitGo does not control its performance, which means a custody client cannot read the integration as a performance guarantee from BitGo.
Structural limits apply too. Only eligible institutional clients can use the integration, and neither company disclosed how much SOL it expects to stake, what the fees are, or which jurisdictions qualify. Unstaking still carries the epoch deactivation delay, so the product is not a substitute for liquid staking tokens. Native staking locks rewards into a stake account that cannot be spent or borrowed against until deactivation completes. Liquid staking tokens such as jitoSOL and mSOL tokenize the position instead, so holders can trade or lend the receipt while the underlying SOL stays delegated; the cost is a layer of smart-contract risk that a custodian-led product is designed to avoid.
The Institutional Staking Pattern
The launch extends a pattern that has been building through 2026. Interactive Brokers began offering Ethereum staking to eligible clients, pulling staking inside a mainstream brokerage account. On Solana, the staking product layer has been growing, and StakerX’s AI agent crossed $40 million in staked Solana assets within three months of launch. What changed here is that the custodian itself becomes the on-ramp.
BitGo’s trust charter is the load-bearing piece. The company secured approval for BitGo Bank & Trust as an OCC-regulated national trust bank, and it already offers staking across other proof-of-stake networks through its custody relationships. Jupiter’s role is narrower but specific: an operator that institutions can assess on its validator uptime and voting record, separate from the custody provider that holds the assets.
The unanswered question is scale. The two firms have not said how much institutional SOL they expect to attract, whether Jupiter’s validator will share maximal extractable value tips with delegators, or when support will extend beyond eligible clients. Those disclosures will determine whether the validator becomes a meaningful share of the roughly $20.9 billion of SOL that is currently unstaked, or a niche product for BitGo’s largest accounts. The observable signal will be Solana’s staking ratio in the coming quarters, and whether other regulated custodians respond with their own native staking rails.
