Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ) launched “Bitcoin Does,” its first major bitcoin consumer advertising campaign, on October 1, the company said. The push targets roughly 60 million “bitcoin-curious” Americans and recasts bitcoin as practical, everyday money rather than a speculative asset, showing uses like buying a flower bouquet or splitting a dinner bill with friends. The Oakland, California-based fintech is the parent of Cash App and Square, and the campaign is its most direct effort yet to move bitcoin from investment into daily spending.
A mainstream pitch that skips the speculation
Block’s research estimates about 22% of U.S. adults have never owned bitcoin but are open to buying, trying or using it. Most bitcoin conversations begin with speculation or technical explanations, Block argues, leaving people unsure where the asset fits into their lives. The campaign answers with familiar settings, from a nail salon to a vinyl shop and a flower shop, where characters call out rising prices, rent hikes and confusing loan terms before bitcoin shows up as a working payment option.
Cash App, Square and Bitkey carry the message
The work is built around three Block products. Cash App handles buying, sending and paying with bitcoin, Bitkey is a self-custody wallet, and Square lets merchants accept the asset at checkout. Cash App has onboarded more than 24 million active bitcoin users since 2018, and Block’s payment rails now reach crypto purchases through Cash App Pay. “Cash App, Square, and Bitkey are helping make bitcoin more accessible and useful,” said Miles Suter, Bitcoin Lead at Block. “This campaign is our first major illustration of what a bitcoin-centric financial system could look like.”
Rollout spans streaming, TV and theaters
The campaign began rolling out October 1 across YouTube, X, Meta and Instagram, and on television through Fox Sports, with additional posts planned through December 31. It will also screen in theaters this winter at select showings of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune 3.” Directed by Alec Sutherland with creative from GrandArmy, the campaign includes five 15-second films and a 30-second compilation.
The ad push arrives as Block deepens its regulated crypto footprint, including its application for a national trust bank charter for Builders Bank. Disclosures in the release note that bitcoin services are not available to New York residents and are not FDIC-insured.
