Crypto exchanges have been handing out trading fee discounts and one-time airdrops for years. But the fight for user stickiness is entering a different phase. Bybit, the exchange that regularly claims the number two spot by trading volume, launched a unified rewards ecosystem on Tuesday that looks less like a promotional campaign and more like a structural moat.
Dubbed Bybit Galaxy, the program ties together spot, derivatives, and likely other product lines under one loyalty umbrella, according to the official announcement. The language is vague on mechanics, but the intent is clear: make it harder for users to take their volume elsewhere.
Beyond Fee Discounts: The Loyalty Shift
Centralized exchanges have spent the last two years watching decentralized perp protocols and aggregators eat into their volume. Fee compression alone no longer works as a differentiator. So the smart ones are building ecosystems that mimic airline loyalty programs—cross-product points, tiered perks, and long-term lock-in.
Bybit already runs a launchpad, an NFT marketplace, and staking services. Galaxy appears to thread rewards through all of them. That’s a departure from the old model where each product had its own isolated incentive structure. A user who earns points on futures trades could theoretically redeem them in the NFT marketplace without leaving the platform. That friction reduction is the whole game.
What Galaxy Means for Bybit’s Competitive Stance
Bybit built its reputation on derivatives, particularly during the 2021 bull run when it attracted serious market makers with deep liquidity. But competition from OKX, Binance’s dominance, and the rise of GMX-style DEXs has put pressure on its share. A loyalty universe that spans both spot and derivatives could help retain institutional and retail flow alike.
For high-frequency trading desks, every basis point of cost matters. If Galaxy converts trading activity into redeemable value across products, it changes the net cost calculus. That’s crucial for an exchange that needs its order books to stay thick. At the same time, the regulatory environment for exchanges remains unsettled, as reflected in recent fights over key crypto legislation in the U.S.. A strong user base that is economically tethered to the platform gives an exchange political heft too.
Retail traders chasing this week’s gainers, a phenomenon tracked in weekly altcoin surges, are notoriously fickle. Programs like Galaxy are designed to convert that speculative attention into something stickier. The more products a trader uses, the higher the implicit cost of switching to a rival exchange.
Unanswered Questions Around Rewards and Regulation
What’s still missing from the launch is how the reward points will translate into tangible value. Bybit has not said whether Galaxy will interact with its native BIT token or if a new rewards token might appear. Exchange loyalty tokens have a patchy record. Some, like Binance’s BNB, turned into multi-purpose ecosystem assets. Others turned into liabilities when regulators started asking questions about securities laws.
The silence on token integration is probably deliberate. A points-only system avoids immediate regulatory headaches, but also caps the upside for users. The real test will be whether Galaxy changes user behavior or becomes just another front-end layer that traders ignore. The broader ecosystem that Bybit plugs into depends on resilient on-chain activity, as shown by sustained developer activity across top blockchains. Without that foundation, even the cleverest loyalty program will struggle to retain relevance.
If Galaxy succeeds in locking in liquidity, expect other major exchanges to follow with their own unified universes. The race to build the stickiest walled garden in crypto is just getting started.
