Coinbase said on September 3 that it filed notice registrations with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its derivatives exchange and broker as it works to bring single-stock perpetual contracts to the United States. The company’s announcement described the filings as a step toward an onshore product, not a launch, and said Coinbase intends to collaborate with both the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Filings Set Up a New U.S. Product Push
The disclosure connects two regulated functions in Coinbase’s plan: a derivatives exchange and a broker. Coinbase did not identify the legal names used in the notices or say what review remains before either entity could support the proposed contracts. Its wording therefore establishes that registrations were filed this week, while leaving the product’s final regulatory route unresolved.
Single-stock perpetuals would give exposure tied to individual equities through derivative contracts rather than direct ownership of the underlying shares. Coinbase did not specify which stocks it wants to list, whether trading would run continuously, or how the contracts would handle collateral, funding, settlement and liquidations.
The Announcement Does Not Equal Approval
Coinbase also gave no launch date, customer eligibility rules or state-by-state availability. Those omissions matter because a filing records a procedural step; it does not by itself show that regulators have cleared a market or approved final contract terms. The company’s reference to future collaboration with the SEC and CFTC signals that agency engagement is still part of the process.
The U.S. initiative is distinct from Coinbase’s recent rollout of regulated crypto futures for Canadian traders. That launch involved crypto-linked contracts in another jurisdiction, whereas the newly disclosed U.S. effort concerns derivatives tied to individual stocks.
Product Terms Are the Next Test
The next meaningful disclosures would include the registered entities, regulator responses and contract specifications. Details on eligible investors, trading hours, leverage and risk controls would determine how closely the proposed market resembles offshore stock-perpetual venues and how it differs from conventional U.S. equity products.
Until those details arrive, Coinbase’s statement should be read narrowly: the company has filed the notices and is pursuing a U.S. single-stock perpetual offering, but it has not said the contracts are available or that a launch has received final regulatory clearance.
