Stablecoin-backed cards let users spend dollar-pegged crypto at everyday merchants, and on October 16 the infrastructure behind them grew: Marqeta and Coinbase are expanding their partnership so Marqeta’s business customers can issue cards that draw on users’ stablecoin balances. Coinbase will handle custody of the stablecoins, convert them to fiat, and settle transactions on its Base blockchain, while Marqeta provides card issuance, processing, and the bank and network relationships, the companies said in their joint announcement.
The deal extends a relationship that already exists, because Marqeta issues Coinbase’s crypto-backed cards today. What is new is that the arrangement is built specifically around stablecoin-funded spending, and it opens the offering to both crypto-native businesses and traditional firms that want to offer digital-dollar payments without assembling the payment rails themselves.
How the Coinbase and Marqeta Card Stack Works
The two companies split the work along clear lines. Coinbase, the regulated exchange and stablecoin issuer, will custody the stablecoin balances and manage the conversion between digital assets and fiat. Its Base blockchain will provide the on-chain settlement layer for fast, low-cost transactions. Marqeta, the enterprise card-issuing platform that processed nearly $400 billion in annual payments volume in 2025 and is certified to operate in more than 40 countries, will issue the cards and manage the bank and card-network relationships.
For a business customer, the result is a single platform that funds card programs around the clock. For the cardholder, the stablecoin balance becomes spendable at the millions of merchants that accept card payments, with the stablecoin-to-fiat conversion happening behind the scenes rather than requiring a manual sell step first. “Coinbase is enabling businesses to move money with the speed and efficiency they require,” said Alec Lovett, Coinbase’s head of infrastructure products, adding that the collaboration combines Coinbase’s stablecoin payment rails with Marqeta’s issuing and processing capabilities.
Stablecoin Cards Are Becoming a Real Spending Rail
The Marqeta and Coinbase expansion is the latest step in a wider shift of stablecoins from trading collateral into an actual payments rail. Marqeta already worked with BVNK to build stablecoin card infrastructure in September, and MoneyGram launched a stablecoin-backed card with Visa for spending and cash access in the same period. Visa has also moved stablecoin payments out of pilot programs into production, and Mastercard brought a stablecoin platform live in October.
What links these moves is a shared bet: that businesses want to offer stablecoin spending without becoming stablecoin custodians or blockchain operators themselves. Marqeta’s chief strategy officer, Anthony Peculic, framed the Coinbase deal in those terms, saying Coinbase “brings scale and breadth of infrastructure” to meet the needs of Marqeta’s enterprise customers. The partnership gives a card issuer a ready-made custody, conversion, and settlement stack, which lowers the barrier for any firm that wants to add a stablecoin card product.
What the Announcement Does Not Say Yet
The release is forward-looking rather than a launch notice. It says the companies “will enable” businesses to issue stablecoin-backed cards, but it does not name a first customer, a go-live date, or the specific stablecoins the cards will support. Marqeta’s standard disclaimer notes that actual results may differ from expectations, and the announcement describes planned responsibilities rather than a product that is already live for end users.
That leaves open questions about which jurisdictions the cards will reach first, whether limits or fees will differ from existing card products, and how quickly enterprises sign on. The most concrete signal is structural: custody, conversion, and settlement are now bundled into one Coinbase-backed stack that Marqeta can offer to its enterprise base, which is a material step even before the first card ships.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a stablecoin-backed card?
It is a payment card funded by a stablecoin balance rather than a bank account. When the cardholder spends, the stablecoin is converted to fiat, and the merchant receives the payment through normal card rails.
How does the Coinbase and Marqeta partnership work?
Coinbase custodies the stablecoins, handles fiat conversion, and settles transactions on its Base blockchain. Marqeta issues the cards and manages processing and the bank and network relationships.
Which businesses can offer these cards?
The offering targets Marqeta’s enterprise customers, including both crypto-native companies and traditional businesses, that want to let users spend stablecoin balances at merchants.
Is the Coinbase and Marqeta card available to consumers yet?
No. The October 16 announcement describes a planned collaboration, and no consumer launch date, first customer, or supported stablecoin list was announced.
