Ordinals
Ordinals is a protocol that lets users assign unique data, like images, text, or code, to individual satoshis on the Bitcoin network, effectively turning them into NFTs.
How Ordinals Work
Ordinals treat each satoshi (the smallest Bitcoin unit) as distinct based on the order it was mined. Using a method called “inscription,” users can embed arbitrary data onto a satoshi without changing Bitcoin’s core protocol. These inscribed satoshis can then be tracked, transferred, and traded—similar to NFTs on other blockchains.
Why Ordinals Matter
Ordinals bring digital collectibles and new functionality to the Bitcoin network, which was traditionally limited to simple transactions. This innovation opens the door to Bitcoin-native NFTs, on-chain art, and experimental use cases, all without needing a separate token or smart contract layer.
