Proof of Elapsed Time (PoET)
Proof of Elapsed Time (PoET) is a blockchain consensus algorithm that uses trusted hardware to randomly assign block creation rights after a set wait time.
How PoET Works
In PoET, each participating node waits for a randomly chosen period before it can create a new block. The node with the shortest wait time “wins” and validates the next block. This waiting process is verified using secure hardware, such as Intel’s Software Guard Extensions (SGX), ensuring fairness and preventing manipulation.
Why PoET Is Used
PoET offers a low-energy, highly scalable alternative to Proof of Work. It reduces computational waste while still maintaining network security. Often used in permissioned blockchains like Hyperledger Sawtooth, PoET suits enterprise environments where efficiency and trusted execution are key priorities.
