Proof of Replication (PoRep)
Proof of Replication (PoRep) is a cryptographic method that proves a piece of data has been uniquely stored by a miner on their own physical storage.
How PoRep Works
In PoRep, a storage provider must prove that they’ve stored a full, encoded copy of a dataset in a way that’s unique and physically replicated. This prevents miners from pretending to store data or sharing storage responsibilities. The process involves transforming the data and generating cryptographic proofs that can be independently verified.
Why PoRep Is Useful
PoRep is especially important for decentralized storage networks like Filecoin, where proving long-term, exclusive storage is critical. It ensures data integrity and prevents duplication or cheating. Combined with Proof of Spacetime, PoRep helps build trust in storage-based blockchains by confirming data is truly held over time.
