Witness
A witness is a participant in certain blockchain networks, like those using Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), who is responsible for validating transactions and producing new blocks.
What a Witness Does
In DPoS-based systems such as EOS or Steem, witnesses are elected by token holders to maintain the blockchain. They perform duties similar to miners or validators in other networks but are selected based on community votes. Their role includes verifying transactions, maintaining network security, and ensuring blocks are added to the chain in a timely manner.
Why Witnesses Matter
Witnesses are vital to the efficiency and security of DPoS blockchains. They help make the network faster and more scalable by limiting the number of block producers. Since witnesses are chosen by the community, the system encourages accountability and participation from token holders in network governance.
