Hedera has contributed CLPR (pronounced “clipper”), the bridgeless Cross-Ledger Protocol in development by Hashgraph, to the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT) as a new lab, the company announced on September 24. The contribution turns the interoperability effort into an openly developed codebase and opens a three-phase early adopter program aimed at financial institutions, fintechs, asset issuers and liquidity providers.
From in-house protocol to open-source lab
As an LFDT lab, CLPR moves into the foundation’s GitHub repositories, where developers can review the code, propose use cases and contribute before the project reaches full top-level LFDT status. The contribution follows Hedera’s earlier donation of its full network codebase to the foundation as Project Hiero. “Just weeks ago marked the two-year anniversary of Hedera’s establishment as a founding Premier Member of the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust,” said Leemon Baird, co-founder of Hedera and chief scientist at Hashgraph. “Today’s announcement that Hedera is contributing another protocol to LFDT shows that our commitment is only growing, and we’re excited to see how developers experiment with CLPR’s capabilities.”
State proofs instead of bridges
Blockchain networks largely operate as separate ecosystems with their own consensus rules, token standards and execution environments. Assets issued on one ledger generally cannot interact natively with another, and workarounds such as bridges and wrapped assets add security risks, intermediaries and liquidity requirements. CLPR is designed to address this by using state proofs that let ledgers verify each other’s states directly, with no intermediary in between, so applications can move tokens, data and messages across networks without a bridge. The protocol builds on Hedera’s existing interoperability work, including its adoption of Chainlink for DeFi and real-world assets.
Early adopter program targets institutions
Alongside the contribution, Hashgraph opened the Cross-Ledger Early Adopter Program, a three-phase virtual program focused on cross-border payments and in-flight FX, cross-ledger settlement, and collateral mobility. Selected participants gain access to a Hashgraph-hosted testnet environment, where they can move real test assets through a CLPR-enabled application layer with help from an assigned integration expert. “Cross-ledger interoperability is key to unlocking the flow of value across networks and platforms,” said Daniela Barbosa, general manager of decentralized technologies at the Linux Foundation. Hedera first unveiled CLPR at HederaCon on September 22, and the early adopter program is the next step toward a full market launch.
