A man invests $20 in obscure crypto currency, and he wakes up to discover he is now worth $1.4 trillion. However, he later discovers it was a glitch, and shares the news on his Twitter account.
A man invests $20 in obscure crypto currency and becomes an overnight trillionaire was one of the most interesting news stories of 2021 by NewsWeek. While his newfound wealth was only temporary, it was still quite interesting how it happened.
Chris Williamson had no dreams of ever becoming a trillionaire when he invested $20 in the Rocket Bunny cryptocurrency. However, that is exactly what ended up happening. Before his investment turned into a trillion, Chris Williamson had dabbled in the crypto market for around eight months. Williamson, a student at the Georgia nursing school, had been investing in cryptocurrency via Coinbase.
His $20 investment grew to over $1.4 trillion. According to Williamson, he woke up at around 9 AM the following day to check how his crypto portfolio was doing. When he saw how well he was doing, he thought he was dreaming. He told Fox 5 that “and I’m just like, ‘Naw, I’m sleeping.’”
How He Reacted to the News
After the initial shock, Williamson rushed to open his Coinbase cryptocurrency app. However, a different price showed up when he tried to shift the funds outside the Coinbase app. So he got in touch with the company to know what happened. The student said that Coinbase told him they would look into it. At the same time, he tried to contact Rocket Bunny. However, they never replied.
The nursing student decided to have some fun with the development on Twitter. He said that by that point, he was sure there was no way his investment had grown to its current amount. The nursing trainee expected the exchange would soon correct the error. However, the amount kept increasing. He checked again to confirm that a fake coin was not scamming him, and it was true.
Soon, the nursing trainee from Georgia was tweeting Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, asking him what to do with his newfound cryptocurrency wealth. He said that since Musk sometimes trolls people who reply to him, he hoped the Tesla CEO would see it and respond.
What He Would With the Amount
The nursing trainee said that 1.4 trillion was a large sum of money, which he could not spend in one lifetime. As such, he would seek to do good with the money.
The exchange later told him that withdrawing the cryptocurrency from his digital wallet was impossible. According to what they told him, it wasn’t the actual amount in the account. Staff said they were working to resolve the glitch.
While it made for a good story, he does not believe that it was true he had amassed a huge fortune in one day. He said that a friend of his from Jasper tried to buy some cryptocurrencies, but they did face the same issue. However, others online claimed to have experienced a similar glitch. While you may not make anything close to a billion from a small crypto investment, there are still many compelling reasons to invest in crypto.
