Neal Stephenson is the mastermind who coined the term “Metaverse” more than three decades ago. He is now launching a brand new Metaverse-focused blockchain project called LAMINA1. He has also revised and improved his vision and plans for Metaverse, further stating that his experience will likely focus more on 2D flat screens instead of just virtual or augmented reality technology. This type of technology, such as headsets and lenses, has been used in models by Microsoft and Meta.
There was a recent announcement made by the OG crypto investor and former chairman of Bitcoin Foundation Peter Vessenes. According to him, he and Neal Stephenson co-founded an entirely new layer 1 blockchain called LAMINA1, which will serve as a foundation layer for Open Metaverse.
Vessenes talked more about getting the opportunity to work with Neal Stephenson, and he stated that: “Neal brings his vision, wisdom, experience, and some core goals: helping get artists and other value creators paid properly for their work, helping the environment… and seeing a truly Open Metaverse get built instead of seeing the Metaverse vision co-opted by monopolies.”
Lamina1 Connects Visionary Science Fiction to the Near Future Metaverse
The Metaverse is an amazing virtual modern environment that can be accessed using a worldwide fiber-optic network and VR headsets. Neal Stephenson highlights the struggles faced due to socioeconomic inequality in his book Snow Crash. He started the debate on virtual real estate and further expressed his thoughts on his Twitter account regarding Metaverse. He said:
Neal Stepheson predicted that a lot of the Metaverse would be built for displays instead of the primary focus being on VR headsets. The co-founder of LAMINA1, Peter Vessenes stated that the entire network would most likely be carbon negative. He shed further light on Neal’s vision for an Open Metaverse and said: “A place to build something a bit closer to Neal’s vision – one that privileges creators, technical and artistic, one that provides support, spatial computing tech, and a community to support those who are building out the Metaverse.”
Although specific details about LAMINA1 have not yet been made available to the public, there are some reports about who the potential investors might be. Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin is one of the notable names among the list of investors for this project.
Peter Vessenes talked about his goals and how he’s going to focus on getting the blockchain off to a rapid start as he tries to set up governance, node operators, technology, artists, IP partners, business partners, and necessary funds.
We will have to wait to get more updates about this extremely futuristic project and see the approach the co-founders will take regarding this. Neal Stephenson didn’t expect the technology to get this far when he first introduced Metaverse thirty years ago. The father of Metaverse is ready to take things to the next level!
