Polygon Labs has completed its acquisition of Coinme, folding 37 U.S. state money-transmitter licenses and 11 applicable exemptions, plus federal registration, into the Polygon Open Money Stack and turning the Ethereum scaling team into a regulated payments operator, according to the company’s announcement. The deal, confirmed on 14 October 2026, is the clearest step yet in Polygon’s pivot from layer-2 infrastructure toward the bank and card rails where fiat money actually moves.
The transaction matters because it closes the gap between onchain value and the accounts people can spend from. Coinme brings the licenses; Polygon brings the settlement and wallet infrastructure. Together they let a payments team move dollars in through banks, cards, or cash, settle across chains, and pay out where the recipient can use the money through a single integration.
What the Coinme Deal Adds to Open Money Stack
The acquired U.S. payments business covers 48 states through 37 money-transmitter licenses and 11 applicable exemptions, and it is registered with FinCEN as a money services business. That regulated access is the piece Polygon previously lacked: Open Money Stack already offered accounts, wallets, cross-chain routing, and around-the-clock settlement, but not the state-by-state licensing needed to touch U.S. dollar accounts directly.
The first customers show the intended range. Tazapay, which serves more than 1,000 enterprises across over 30 countries, uses the rails to shorten the path between stablecoins and local currency for cross-border business payments. Mesh adds the on-ramps to a network of more than 300 wallets and exchanges. Toku uses the wallet and payout rails for compliant global payroll in over 100 countries, and Kira pairs stablecoins with U.S. bank accounts for fintechs and OTC desks.
Why a Layer-2 Builder Bought a Money Transmitter
The acquisition follows the strategy Polygon set out in July, when it cut staff to reposition from a layer-2 foundation into a blockchain payments company. The logic is that moving money onchain is useful at scale only if it connects to the accounts and payment systems already around it. Coinme supplies that connection, while earlier Open Money Stack work such as adding Tron’s USDT to U.S. bank rails supplies the settlement layer.
There is a genuine tension in the move. A money-transmitter license is a compliance obligation as much as a growth asset: it brings state-by-state reporting, bonding, and examination requirements that a protocol team has never had to carry. Polygon is betting that owning the regulated layer is worth that burden because stablecoin and tokenized-payments revenue is increasingly gated by licensing rather than by technology.
What Still Needs to Be Proved
Polygon Labs did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, so the cost of the bet is not public, and the company has not said whether the Coinme brand and its remaining retail footprint will be folded in or wound down. The four launch customers are signed, but no usage figures have been published, and the platform still competes with established money transmitters and banks for the same corridors.
The next observable signals are whether more payment companies adopt the stack, whether Polygon expands beyond the current 48-state footprint, and how quickly the four initial customers turn their integrations into live volume. For now, the deal gives Polygon something its scaling peers do not have: a license to touch U.S. dollars directly.
