4.40%. That is the annual percentage yield SoFi Technologies is advertising on SoFi Earn, a tokenized bank deposit it calls SOFIE and announced on October 22, 2026.
Each SOFIE token represents $1 held on deposit at SoFi Bank, N.A., carries FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, and converts one-for-one into SoFiUSD, the bank’s dollar stablecoin, according to the company’s announcement. It is SoFi’s fifth crypto offering in under a year.
The yield is the point, and so is where the yield sits. SoFiUSD pays no interest. SOFIE does. That split is not a footnote; it is the mechanism that lets a nationally chartered bank pay yield on tokenized dollars without pushing the deposit into the GENIUS Act’s ban on interest-bearing stablecoins.
The Two-Token Design: Earn on a Deposit, Move on a Stablecoin
SoFi describes SOFIE as a deposit, not a coin. “SOFIE is a tokenized deposit representing a deposit liability of SoFi Bank, N.A., Member FDIC,” the release states, then adds the line that carries the load: “SOFIE is not a payment stablecoin.” Funds earn 4.40% APY while they sit, with no minimum balance requirement. The rate is variable and was current as of October 20, 2026, per the fine print.
When a holder wants the money to do something, the design switches rails. The holder converts SOFIE one-for-one into SoFiUSD, then buys crypto inside the SoFi app or sends it to a supported external wallet “over blockchain rails 24/7.” The deposit token earns. The stablecoin moves. Neither does both.
The launch extends a stack SoFi has assembled in less than a year. It opened consumer crypto trading in November 2025 and now lists more than 40 coins. It issued SoFiUSD in December 2025 as the first stablecoin from a U.S. national bank, and now settles its entire card program through its live stablecoin settlement with Mastercard.
Big Business Banking followed earlier in 2026. SOFIE is the earning layer that sits underneath all of it, aimed at the 15.8 million members SoFi already counts on its books.
Why a Deposit and Not a Yield-Bearing Stablecoin
The structure is not accidental. Section 4(a)(11) of the GENIUS Act, enacted in July 2025, bars a permitted payment stablecoin issuer from paying “any form of interest or yield” to a holder “solely in connection with the holding, use, or retention” of the token.
The OCC’s final rule, published October 21, keeps that statutory prohibition intact and takes effect January 18, 2027, the same day the statute itself does.
SoFi’s answer is to put the yield on a bank deposit and keep the stablecoin sterile. The interest is paid on the deposit liability, not on the stablecoin. That is why the release insists SOFIE “is not a payment stablecoin.” The label is doing regulatory work, not just describing the product.
The OCC framed the final rule as a foundation for the stablecoin market. “The GENIUS Act marks a watershed moment in American finance,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in the OCC release, comparing the statute to the 1863 National Currency Act.
Comptroller Jonathan V. Gould added that the rule delivers “strong standards for reserve backing, redemption, and risk management.” Neither official mentioned yield directly; the ban is statutory and predates the rule.
SoFi is not the only institution drawing this line. Canada’s OSFI has already told banks that tokenized deposits are not legally distinct from ordinary deposits, the same premise SoFi’s product leans on: a token can represent a deposit without becoming a security or a stablecoin.
The $64 Billion SoFi Says Is Sitting Still
SoFi’s pitch leans on a specific number: roughly $64 billion, or 21.2% of the stablecoin market, sits idle in “rarely used, forgotten or inactive wallets,” citing Federal Reserve research. The company’s chief executive, Anthony Noto, put the framing plainly in the release.
“Too much money in the digital asset ecosystem is sitting idle, leaving massive potential earnings on the table for millions of people,” Noto said. “We believe your money should keep working for you until the moment you need it.”
The arithmetic behind the pitch is simple, and SoFi does not state it. At the advertised 4.40% APY, that $64 billion would generate roughly $2.8 billion a year in interest if every idle dollar could be redirected into a product like SOFIE.
That is the ceiling of the opportunity being described, not a forecast, because no single issuer captures an entire idle pool. “SoFi Earn combines the earning power and protections of a bank deposit with the speed and utility of digital assets, giving people more value, flexibility and control over their money,” Noto added.
What SOFIE Does Not Do
The product’s limits deserve as much weight as its pitch. SOFIE cannot move on-chain. It has no blockchain rails of its own; to send value anywhere, a holder must first convert it into SoFiUSD, which pays no interest and carries no FDIC insurance. The yield and the utility never exist in the same token at the same moment.
The “idle” framing also deserves scrutiny. The Fed figure SoFi cites counts forgotten or inactive wallets, some of which hold money their owners are not managing at all, rather than dollars actively choosing to forgo yield. The 4.40% APY is variable, “subject to change at any time” and current only as of October 20, 2026. A product marketed on a rate is only as durable as that rate.
There is also the question of what tokenization adds. A tokenized deposit pays the same rate as a savings account and inserts a conversion step before funds can move. The real utility arrives only when an interest-bearing balance meets SoFiUSD’s settlement rails, a combination that matters most to someone already inside the SoFi app and less to anyone who simply wants a high-yield account.
The Next Data Points
SOFIE is rolling out to SoFi Crypto members “now through November,” so adoption figures are months away. Two later signals will show whether the design holds. The first is the OCC’s separate announcement of when it begins accepting applications from prospective permitted payment stablecoin issuers.
The second is whether any bank ships a token that earns and settles in a single instrument, testing how far the deposit label can stretch before a regulator reads it as yield on a stablecoin.
For now, the number to track is not a token price. SOFIE has none; it is pegged to the dollar. The number to track is the rate, and whether 4.40% survives contact with a market that has spent a year watching banks and stablecoin issuers converge.
