Telegram thinks it can solve that problem with a single update. According to a report by WuBlockchain, Telegram founder Pavel Durov has confirmed that the platform will roll out native non-custodial Gram wallets across every Telegram app this summer. The move gives more than 1 billion users access to instant, zero-fee crypto transactions without ever leaving the app.
The scale alone is staggering. No existing crypto wallet has a pre-installed user base that even comes close. Durov framed the rollout as a natural extension of Telegram’s growing digital economy, but the implications for how value moves inside messaging platforms are only beginning to register with the market.
Sidestepping Custody and Middlemen
The wallets will be non-custodial, meaning Telegram does not hold the private keys. That decision ducks a whole category of regulatory and security headaches that have plagued custodial wallet providers. It also shifts more responsibility onto users, a trade-off that has historically limited adoption among less technical audiences. But Telegram’s user interface has a track record of simplifying complex functionality, and the company appears willing to bet that the seamlessness of in-app payments will outweigh the learning curve.
Zero fees are the other hook. Blockchain transactions typically carry gas costs, and wallet providers often layer on service fees. A zero-fee model inside a messaging app could reset user expectations and put pressure on existing wallet providers to rethink fee structures. The economics of how Telegram absorbs or offsets those costs have not been disclosed, which leaves open questions about long-term sustainability. Still, the promise alone is potent marketing.
The TON Factor and Market Sentiment
Gram is the native token of The Open Network (TON), the blockchain originally incubated by Telegram. The token has already shown strength; it recently led weekly gainers among major altcoins, with an 83.63% surge. A built-in distribution channel of this size could amplify demand further, as every Telegram user becomes a potential Gram holder and transactor. That dynamic is rare in crypto, where growth often depends on external referrals and exchange listings rather than organic, in-app exposure.
Developers building on TON may benefit as well. If the wallet integration drives genuine usage, it could attract more dApp builders looking to tap a massive mobile-first audience. The ecosystem still trails larger chains in total value locked and development activity, but the messaging platform’s reach changes the competitive landscape.
Regulatory Fog and Execution Risk
Any product that puts crypto in front of a billion users draws regulatory attention. Telegram has already clashed with U.S. authorities over its previous token offering, leading to a settlement and a restructuring of the TON project. The non-custodial design may help insulate the company from direct liability, but jurisdictions with strict crypto marketing rules could still scrutinize the rollout. How Telegram manages compliance across different markets will matter as much as the technology itself.
Execution risk is another variable. Large-scale software rollouts rarely go smoothly, and the move from limited testing to a full global launch introduces technical challenges, especially around key management and user education. If early users lose access to funds due to mismanaged seed phrases, the public relations damage could offset the adoption gains. Telegram will need to get the onboarding experience exactly right.
