Tesla’s Bitcoin Hoard Swells 43% to $962 Million Without a Single Sale

Nine months is a long time to watch an asset you own shed nearly a third of its value and leave it untouched. Tesla has now done exactly that with Bitcoin, and in the third quarter of 2026 the patience finally printed a number worth a headline.

The electric-vehicle maker’s third-quarter shareholder update filed with the SEC on October 21 carries a digital-asset line of $962 million as of September 30. That is up from $674 million three months earlier, a rise of 42.7%. Every dollar of that increase was an unrealized mark-to-market gain, which means the company neither bought nor sold a single coin during the quarter.

The position is only now climbing back toward where it stood a year ago. The same line read $1,315 million in the third quarter of 2025. It slid to $1,008 million by December, then $786 million by March, then $674 million by June. The recovery to $962 million is Tesla’s first quarter-over-quarter increase in the position in a year, and it happened without a single trade.

The number behind the number

Tesla’s own filings make the mechanics plain. In its second-quarter 10-Q, the company wrote that “the majority of our digital assets were comprised of 11,509 units of Bitcoin held at an acquisition cost of $386 million.” The same sentence, with the same numbers, appears as of December 31, 2025, which means the unit count has not moved for at least nine months.

At $962 million, the position now sits $576 million above that $386 million cost basis, an unrealized gain of roughly 149%. The implied mark works out to about $83,600 per coin, in line with where Bitcoin traded in the final days of September. On the morning of October 22, Bitcoin changed hands near $82,500, according to CoinGecko and Binance spot data.

The five-quarter swing tells the story on its own: a value that fell from $1,315 million to $674 million and then recovered to $962 million, tracked by unrealized gains and losses that ran $80 million, then negative $307 million, negative $222 million, negative $112 million and finally $288 million in the latest quarter.

The accounting is what makes this story move. Tesla now carries its digital assets at fair value, and the changes flow straight through the income statement each quarter. Net of tax, the third-quarter Bitcoin gain was $224 million, worth about $0.06 per share. In the second quarter, the same line was a $112 million pretax loss. A stake Tesla bought years ago for $386 million is now a live, mark-to-market number inside every earnings release.

Bitcoin is not the only fair-value item on the balance sheet. Tesla also carries an equity stake in SpaceX, and that line has been far wilder: a $1,005 million unrealized gain in the second quarter, then a $142 million unrealized loss in the third. In the latest quarter, the $288 million Bitcoin gain more than covered the SpaceX markdown, leaving the two mark-to-market swings at a combined positive $146 million before tax.

Why the gain matters more than it should

Here is the uncomfortable part of the quarter. Tesla’s GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders came in at $787 million, and its income from operations was $718 million, down from $1,624 million a year earlier. The $288 million Bitcoin mark-to-market gain therefore equaled 36.6% of total GAAP net income, more than a third of the profit Tesla reported, delivered by a number that required no cars, no batteries and no sales.

Total revenue was essentially flat year over year at $28.0 billion. The company’s own summary line points management’s attention elsewhere. In the update, Tesla said it “maintained strong momentum on many projects spanning Super Intelligence (SI), robotics and renewable energy that will be critical to building a future of Amazing Abundance.” On self-driving, the company added that “we believe that FSD is driving demand in markets where it is available, and we continue to work with regulators to get it approved in other markets.” The robotaxi and Optimus programs are where the narrative lives; the Bitcoin line is where a slice of the quarter’s profit quietly came from.

What the gain is not

The $288 million is paper. Tesla has not sold the coins, so no cash changed hands, and the company excludes the swing from its preferred operating yardstick. A footnote in the update states that “Beginning in Q1’25, Adjusted EBITDA (non-GAAP) is presented net of digital assets gains and losses.” Adjusted EBITDA came in at $3.9 billion for the quarter, against $4.2 billion a year earlier.

That is the countercase in one line. Strip out the Bitcoin mark and the quarter’s operating story barely moved from the prior year; keep it in and the profit figure looks healthier than the factories alone produced. The risk runs both ways. In the second quarter the same line produced a $112 million loss, and in the fourth quarter of 2025 it produced a $307 million loss. A number that can add $288 million in one quarter can subtract it in the next.

What to watch next

For shareholders, the practical effect is modest but real: the $224 million after-tax gain added roughly $0.06 to third-quarter earnings per share, a figure that would not have existed had the coin fallen instead. The next hard data point is Tesla’s fourth-quarter 10-Q, which will show whether the company finally moved the position or kept holding through the final stretch of the year.

The hold-versus-trade question now divides the corporate treasury set. JPMorgan forecast roughly 10% annual Bitcoin returns but declined to add the asset to its own portfolios, a stance BlockchainReporter covered earlier this week. Tesla is the mirror image: it owns the asset outright and simply declines to sell it.
