The president of a Bitcoin mining company with deep political ties is leaving the world of block rewards for the booming market of artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to the original report from CoinDesk, Matt Prusak has stepped down from American Bitcoin—a firm backed by Eric Trump—to take a role at Giga Energy, a company building power solutions for AI data centers.
The move isn’t just another executive shuffle. It cuts to the heart of a structural realignment taking place across North American energy infrastructure. Mining executives who spent years optimizing for Bitcoin’s hashrate are now being courted by AI firms that need massive, reliable power and the operational expertise to run it at scale.
A High-Profile Exit from Trump-Backed Mining
American Bitcoin occupies a unique niche. The mining operation carries the Trump name at a time when the political family’s crypto ties attract intense scrutiny. Prusak had been a visible leader at the firm, steering it through a market that has punished miners since the most recent halving squeezed margins. His departure to Giga Energy—a pure-play AI infrastructure company—signals more than a career move. It reflects a growing conviction among energy-sector veterans that AI demand is the more durable long-term bet.
Giga Energy specializes in power infrastructure for data centers, a segment that has drawn billions in capital as hyperscalers rush to secure power. For Prusak, the jump is natural. The skills that run a mining facility—load balancing, thermal management, energy procurement—are nearly identical to what AI hosting requires.
The Mining Industry’s AI Pivot
Bitcoin miners have been quietly retooling for AI workloads for more than a year. The logic is straightforward. Sites with locked-in power purchase agreements and existing cooling infrastructure can skip years of permitting delays that new data center builds face. As AI workloads demand immense computational power, the overlap with crypto’s energy-intensive operations becomes impossible to ignore. The rise of decentralized computing platforms—such as those used for AI-driven Web3 applications—demonstrates how the two sectors are converging. Storage networks like Filecoin are already positioning for AI data demand, further blurring the lines.
Several large publicly traded miners have already converted a portion of their capacity to high-performance computing hosting, securing multi-year contracts that offer steadier revenue than Bitcoin’s volatile hashprice. The trend has turned mining into a hybrid business, where the asset is no longer just the coin but the physical infrastructure itself.
What It Means for American Bitcoin and Investors
Prusak’s exit raises uncomfortable questions. American Bitcoin has not announced a significant AI diversification strategy of its own. Without one, the firm risks being viewed as a legacy play while competitors lock in lucrative AI deals. The Trump connection adds another layer of complexity. Political tailwinds expected from a crypto-friendly administration have yet to translate into policy clarity for miners. With a major crypto bill facing opposition from traditional banks, as reported earlier, the regulatory environment remains a wildcard for miners who depend on policy stability to plan capital expenditure.
For investors, the personnel change is a reminder that not every mining firm will successfully pivot. The talent war is intensifying, and losing a president to an AI energy startup suggests that some of the best operators see greater opportunity outside pure-play mining.
Uncertainty and the Road Ahead
While the AI pivot is logical, it is not without risk. Power demands from AI are surging, and miners could find themselves outbid by dedicated data center developers with deeper pockets. Bitcoin’s network fundamentals could also shift if the hashprice recovers, luring capital back to mining. What remains unclear is how many more mining executives will follow Prusak’s path. The single move does not make a trend, but it is a concrete sign that the energy and data center buildout for AI is pulling seasoned operators away from the rigs. The exit leaves American Bitcoin at a crossroads, and the market will watch closely to see whether the Trump-backed miner can carve out its own place in the AI era.
