U.S. Bank launched USBDC, its proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, on Sept. 9 after completing a live cross-border pilot on the Stellar blockchain. The transaction moved value between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe while remaining connected to the bank’s finance, risk, compliance and operations systems.
The bank’s official announcement describes USBDC as one of the first bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain. The completed transaction was an internal pilot, however, and the release does not say the token is generally available to customers.
The pilot tested issuance and control functions
U.S. Bank said the exercise evaluated minting, payment redemption, freezing and clawback capabilities. Those functions run through its internally developed Digital Asset Platform, which the bank says links tokenized assets with established banking infrastructure.
The pilot therefore tested more than a blockchain transfer. It also examined how a bank-issued token could operate alongside controls used for accounting, compliance and transaction management. U.S. Bank did not disclose the value of the transfer or identify a date for a broader commercial rollout.
Stellar carried the cross-border transaction
The bank executed the pilot on Stellar as part of its relationship with the Stellar Development Foundation. U.S. Bank cited the network’s global reach, near-instant settlement and transaction costs below one cent as reasons it can support regulated financial services.
Stellar is already being used by other payment companies for dollar-linked tokens. BlockchainReporter previously reported on PayPal expanding PYUSD to Stellar, a separate move aimed at extending stablecoin payments across the network. USBDC differs because it was issued by a regulated bank for a controlled cross-border test between its own entities.
Broader institutional uses remain exploratory
U.S. Bank said it is evaluating potential applications including liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury operations. These are areas under exploration rather than services confirmed as commercially launched.
“This live pilot demonstrates our ability to accelerate global cash management and money movement capabilities,” U.S. Bank chief executive Gunjan Kedia said in the announcement. Jamie Walker, the bank’s head of Digital Assets and Money Movement, called the transaction another step in its broader digital-asset strategy.
The result gives U.S. Bank a working demonstration of a bank-issued dollar token on a public network. The next test will be whether the platform moves beyond transactions between affiliated entities into client-facing treasury or payment products, and under what operating and regulatory conditions.
