Blur, once the largest marketplace for trading Ethereum NFTs, will shut down its blur.io website on November 12, 2026, after monthly trading volume collapsed more than 99% from its March 2023 peak. The team framed the change in its October 12 announcement as a frontend deprecation rather than a full shutdown: the on-chain marketplace protocol will remain operational, and BLUR tokenholders will keep control of the fee switch that could turn trading fees on.
The same date ends new loan matching on Blend, Blur’s NFT lending arm. Borrowers have until November 12 to repay their loans or let them default, and the team said it will provide a separate frontend tool afterward for withdrawing assets still held in Blend.
What Is Shutting Down, and What Stays Live
The shutdown covers only the blur.io frontend. Blur’s smart contracts keep running on Ethereum, so the marketplace’s underlying trading system is not being deleted. The fee switch stays under BLUR tokenholder control, meaning holders can still vote on whether the marketplace should begin charging trading fees. On the same November 12 date, Blend stops matching new loans; existing borrowers must repay by then or accept default, and a dedicated withdrawal tool will follow for assets left in the protocol.
The Numbers Behind a 99% Collapse
At its March 2023 peak, Blur handled roughly $1.43 billion in monthly volume and more than 70% of all Ethereum NFT trading, according to DefiLlama data cited by CoinDesk. By March 2026 that figure had fallen below $7 million, a decline of more than 99.5%. Token Terminal records $0 in protocol revenue for the marketplace over the past three years despite those billions in trades, because Blur charged no trading fees. The BLUR token fell more than 20% after the announcement, and the site still advertises more than $7.4 billion in lifetime volume.
Why Fee-Free Volume Was Never a Business
Blur launched in 2022 and took on OpenSea by offering pro traders faster transactions, lower fees and token rewards. The strategy worked as a volume play but not as a revenue model: zero marketplace fees meant the platform earned nothing directly from trading, and its aggressive incentive programs drew criticism for encouraging speculative, reward-seeking activity rather than genuine collecting. The picture has limits: CoinDesk notes the $0 revenue figure does not establish whether Blend earned income from lending, and Blur, unlike sister network Blast, has not publicly attributed the shutdown to operating losses.
What the Shutdown Closes for the NFT Market
The move is the second retreat in ten days by projects from the team of Tieshun Roquerre, known as Pacman. Blast’s shutdown followed its assets falling from more than $2 billion to about $32 million, and it did cite costs exceeding revenue. Together the two closures mark a clear exit from the incentive-driven NFT and Layer 2 era of 2022 and 2023. What to watch next: the November 12 deadline, whether Blend borrowers repay or default, the release of the Blend withdrawal tool, and whether BLUR holders ever vote to switch fees on.
