Konzum, the largest supermarket chain in Croatia, is keeping up with the times by debuting payments in crypto like Bitcoin (BTC).
Croatia’s top food retailer Konzum provided a cryptocurrency payments option to customers at its online store as of December 1 – the first retail chain in the country to do so, it said on Wednesday. “Currently, cryptocurrency payments are possible in our webshop, and we plan to launch this option soon in other stores throughout Croatia,” the company said in a statement. Konzum stores are named Konzum, Konzum Maxi, or Super Konzum according to their sizes.
The lineup of supported digital currencies includes Ether (ETH), Bitcoin (BTC), XRP, Stellar Lumen (XLM) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), as well two stablecoins (Tether [USDT] and DAI). Shoppers are now able to buy groceries, hygiene items, household supplies and other items with the aforementioned cryptocurrencies.
The report also said that payment with cryptocurrencies has been introduced in cooperation with the Croatian fintech company Electrocoin and its PayCek system – the country’s first cryptocurrency payment processor.
Uros Kalinic, a member of Konzum’s Finance and IT Management Board said: “The introduction of cryptocurrency payments is another indicator that Konzum is constantly monitoring global trends, introducing innovations, and setting a standard in the retail sector. We continue to invest in the development of innovations and technologies.”
Although Konzum currently only accepts online crypto, it plans to expand the payment option to its entire supermarket chain in the near future. The retailer operates more than 700 stores in Croatia and has more than 10,000 employees.
