How to Read Crypto Press Releases and Token Announcements Critically

Last Updated: October 27, 2026

Quick Answer: A crypto press release is an announcement a project writes about itself and pays to distribute. The major wire services disclaim responsibility for the accuracy of releases in their terms, and crypto-focused wires sell distribution packages that place releases on partner news sites, so a release that appears on dozens of outlets shows that a distribution package was bought, not that each outlet checked the claims independently. Before acting on one, confirm partnership, listing, audit and insurance claims on the named partner’s, exchange’s or auditor’s own channels, check who holds the tokens and when they unlock, and treat guaranteed returns or countdown pressure as warning signs.

Press releases are part of how crypto projects communicate, and many are accurate. But they are marketing, not reporting, and the same channels that carry real news have carried fake partnerships, invented audits and promises of listings that never happened. This guide explains who checks what in the press release business, which disclosure rules apply to paid promotion, seven red flags that show up often in token announcements and how to check each claim yourself.

Key Takeaways

• Wires do not vouch for content: GlobeNewswire and PR Newswire make the issuer solely responsible for accuracy in their terms, and Business Wire says it assumes no responsibility for inaccurate content on its site
• Wide coverage can be bought: crypto-focused wires sell packages that place a release on a set of partner outlets, so seeing the same text everywhere is evidence of a paid package, not of independent verification
• A partnership is real when both sides confirm it: Helium’s developer paid a $200,000 SEC penalty, without admitting or denying the claims, after the SEC alleged it falsely told investors that big companies used its network
• Binance says listings cannot be bought: the exchange says no listing is ever guaranteed and that anyone claiming to represent it in exchange for payment is a fraud
• Disclosure rules exist but differ: US, EU and UK rules require paid promotion to be identified in many cases, but their scope and enforcement vary
• The losses are large: Americans reported $7.2 billion in losses to crypto investment fraud in 2025, according to the FBI

What a Crypto Press Release Is, and What It Is Not

A press release is a statement a company writes about itself and pays to distribute. Wire services send it to news sites, financial data terminals and search engines, often word for word. Many crypto news sites, including this one, also publish paid releases under a label. That makes a release a useful record of what a project claims. It is not evidence that the claims are true.

The wires say so in their own terms. GlobeNewswire’s terms state that the customer is “solely responsible” for the accuracy of its releases and that the wire has no obligation to monitor them. PR Newswire says issuers are solely responsible and that it does not guarantee accuracy. Business Wire says it assumes no responsibility for inaccurate content on its site.

Crypto-focused wires add a promise of reach: they sell packages that place a release on a set of partner outlets. Some also say their editors review releases before distribution. Even so, when the same text appears on 40 crypto sites within an hour, that usually reflects one paid distribution, not 40 independent confirmations.

Verification badges have limits too. In 2024, GlobeNewswire added a “CLEAR Verified” badge for US customers, which confirms the sender’s identity through an ID and selfie check. It shows who sent a release, not whether its contents are true. A real wire can also carry a fake release: in 2021, a fraudulent account used a legitimate wire to announce that Walmart would accept Litecoin, which Walmart denied the same day. Our guide on how to verify crypto news and rumors covers that case and other fake headlines.

How to Tell Paid Content From Reporting

• Look for the label. Publishers mark paid material with words such as “Press Release,” “Sponsored,” “Paid content” or “Commissioned,” usually near the headline or in a disclaimer at the end.
• Check the byline. A release is credited to the company or a PR desk, not to a reporter, and quotes come only from the company and its partners.
• Look for independent sources. Reporting cites outside documents, data or people who were not paid to comment. A release rarely does.
• Search a sentence. If a distinctive sentence appears word for word on many sites, you are reading a distributed release.
• Separate claims from adjectives. Words like “revolutionary,” “leading” or “major partnership” carry no information. Dates, names, contract addresses and filings can be checked.

On this site, press releases and sponsored articles carry a visible label and appear in a separate Press Releases section. Our sponsored content policy explains how paid material is handled, and our editorial policy explains how news is reported.

Disclosure Rules for Paid Crypto Promotion

United States. Section 17(b) of the Securities Act makes it unlawful to publicize a security in exchange for payment received, directly or indirectly, from an issuer, underwriter or dealer without fully disclosing the payment and its amount. In 2017, SEC enforcement staff warned that this applies to anyone promoting tokens that are securities. The boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the producer DJ Khaled settled touting charges in 2018. In 2022, Kim Kardashian agreed to pay $1.26 million after the SEC said she was paid $250,000 to post about EthereumMax tokens without disclosing it. In 2023, the SEC charged Justin Sun and eight celebrities who promoted his tokens; six of the celebrities settled for a total of more than $400,000.

The US picture has since shifted. In March 2026, the SEC filed a proposed final judgment, subject to court approval, under which Rainberry, formerly BitTorrent, would pay a $10 million penalty without admitting or denying the allegations, and all claims against Sun, the Tron Foundation and the BitTorrent Foundation would be dismissed. The SEC also moved to drop its touting claim against the rapper Soulja Boy. Section 17(b) covers only securities. In February 2025, SEC staff said in a statement without legal force that transactions in the type of meme coins it described do not involve the offer and sale of securities. In March 2026, the SEC issued an interpretation saying that digital commodities, digital collectibles and digital tools are not themselves securities, and SEC Chairman Paul Atkins said most crypto assets are not securities. The interpretation also says a token that is not a security can still be sold as part of an investment contract, which is a security, and that how an issuer markets a token is relevant to that test. For many tokens, the touting rule may therefore not apply, although fraud laws and other agencies still can. Separately, the Federal Trade Commission’s Endorsement Guides, updated in June 2023, say that endorsers, including influencers, must disclose a material connection to the seller that the audience would not expect, in a way that is difficult to miss and easy to understand.

European Union. Under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), marketing for a token offered to the public or admitted to trading in the EU must be clearly identifiable as marketing, fair, clear and not misleading, and consistent with the token’s white paper. For tokens other than the stablecoins MiCA calls asset-referenced and e-money tokens, it must also state that it has not been reviewed or approved by any competent authority in an EU member state and that the offeror, or the person seeking admission to trading, is solely responsible for its content. MiCA’s market abuse rules, which cover tokens admitted to trading or awaiting admission, ban spreading false or misleading information, including rumors, that sends false signals about a token’s supply, demand or price when the person knew or ought to have known it was false. They also ban using media access to voice an opinion on a token after taking a position in it, and then profiting from the price effect, without properly disclosing that conflict. The last transition periods for existing crypto firms ended on July 1, 2026, some member states having ended theirs earlier, and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) tells investors to check that a firm is listed as authorized in its interim MiCA register before investing or transferring funds.

United Kingdom. Since October 8, 2023, crypto promotions aimed at UK consumers must be made or approved by an authorized firm, come from a registered crypto business or fall under an exemption. They must carry a set risk warning that begins, “Don’t invest unless you’re prepared to lose all the money you invest.” First-time investors get a 24-hour cooling-off period, and refer-a-friend bonuses are banned. In the regime’s first year, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued 1,702 alerts about illegal crypto promotions and had more than 900 scam websites taken down and 56 apps removed.

Seven Red Flags in Crypto Press Releases and Token Announcements

1. A Partnership Only One Side Has Announced

A frequent inflated claim is a partnership with a famous company. In April 2025, Nova Labs, the developer of the Helium network, agreed to pay a $200,000 penalty, without admitting or denying the allegations, to settle SEC claims that it told prospective equity investors that companies including Lime, Nestlé and Salesforce used its network when they did not. A famous name on a token is not a partnership either. In July 2025, OpenAI said it had not partnered with Robinhood and did not endorse tokens that Robinhood called “OpenAI tokens,” which Robinhood said gave indirect exposure through a stake in a special purpose vehicle, TechCrunch reported. In May 2025, Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced a $300 million deal with Elon Musk’s xAI; Musk replied that no deal had been signed, and Toncoin, which had jumped about 19%, gave back part of the gain, according to The Block.

How to check: a partnership is confirmed when both companies announce it on channels they control, such as their newsrooms or verified accounts. Silence from the bigger partner is a warning sign.

2. Listing Claims an Exchange Has Not Made

“Listing soon on a top exchange” is a common hook. In December 2025, Binance said it does not appoint or endorse any individual or agency to arrange listings, that “no listing is ever guaranteed” and that it charges no fees for project evaluations or listing applications. Volume and data-site rankings can also be manufactured. In June 2025, the founder of the market maker Gotbit was sentenced to eight months in prison after the firm faked trading volume for client tokens. According to prosecutors, he had described in a 2019 interview how he built code to inflate volume so tokens could get listed on CoinMarketCap and trade on larger exchanges. The firm was ordered to forfeit about $23 million in crypto.

How to check: look for the listing on the exchange’s own announcement page. Binance also offers a verification tool for checking whether a link, email or social media account is official.

3. Audits That Do Not Exist or Do Not Cover the Contract

An audit badge is easy to copy. In January 2024, the security firm CertiK warned about phishing sites falsely claiming CertiK audits. Scammers borrow auditors’ names for other frauds too: in May 2026, New Zealand’s Financial Markets Authority flagged a “CertiK Audit” imposter in a warning about fake fund recovery services. SEC staff have also warned that proof-of-reserves reports are not the same as financial statement audits.

How to check: find the report on the auditor’s own website, such as CertiK’s Skynet or Hacken’s public audit list, and confirm that the audited contract address matches the token you are looking at. An audit of a different contract, or of an earlier version, does not cover the token on sale.

4. Insurance, Asset Backing or Regulatory Approval

Claims that a token is insured, backed by assets or registered with a regulator need documents behind them. In April 2026, the SEC sued the backers of Bitcoin Latinum, alleging that they promoted it as “the world’s first insured digital asset” although no insurer had ever issued coverage. In May 2025, the SEC charged Unicoin and its executives, alleging that they marketed tokens as asset-backed and SEC-registered and claimed more than $3 billion in sales while raising no more than $110 million. These claims are the SEC’s allegations, not court findings.

How to check: search the SEC’s EDGAR database for registration claims, and ask for the insurer’s or custodian’s name and confirm it with that company directly.

5. Guaranteed Returns, Set Listing Prices and Countdowns

The SEC’s investor education site lists “guaranteed returns” and pressure to invest right away among the main red flags of fraud. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that crypto pump-and-dump schemes use false news reports and posts that create false urgency and tell readers to buy now. In the UK, FCA guidance on crypto yield products such as staking and lending says advertised rates of return should not be promoted as “guaranteed.” A presale that promises a fixed price after listing is promising something the market, not the project, will decide.

How to check: treat any promised return, price target or countdown in an announcement as marketing. Exchanges decide listings and markets set prices; press releases do neither.

6. An Anonymous Team With No Track Record

FINRA, the US brokerage regulator, notes that the pseudonymous nature of crypto is one reason bad actors are drawn to it. Anonymous teams are common and not always a sign of fraud, but they remove an important check: you cannot look up their history. In October 2026, federal prosecutors in Chicago announced a wire fraud indictment against the creator of the Kishu Inu token, who operated online under aliases, over an alleged rug pull that they say brought him about $9 million.

How to check: look for named founders with verifiable work histories, identity checks by a known firm, such as CertiK’s KYC badge, and registration with a regulator where the project sells to the public.

7. Hidden Insider Allocations and Unlock Schedules

Announcements rarely lead with who owns the supply. In the Kishu Inu case, prosecutors allege that tokens were secretly allocated to the creators when the asset was launched and later sold. Scheduled unlocks matter too: a Keyrock study of 16,000 token unlock events found that 90% created negative price pressure, that team unlocks caused the steepest drops, about 25%, and that price effects often started 30 days before the unlock.

How to check: read the tokenomics section of the white paper, compare it with the holder list on a block explorer and check unlock calendars such as Tokenomist, CryptoRank or CoinGecko before buying.

Case Study: The Bitcoin Latinum Complaint

The SEC’s April 17, 2026 complaint against the backers of Bitcoin Latinum shows how several red flags can appear in one campaign. The SEC alleges that the project raised about $16 million from hundreds of investors and that its promoters:

• issued promotional press releases through newswire services
• paid a marketing firm for a social media package the firm called “MegaShilling,” which the SEC says included 500 to 700 posts or conversations a day
• announced a partnership with a luxury hospitality company in a press release (the SEC cites it as marketing and does not allege the partnership was false)
• marked “Listing on Coinmarketcap” as completed on the project’s roadmap and, according to the SEC, paid for the token to be listed on overseas trading platforms
• called the token insured and asset-backed when, according to the SEC, no insurance coverage or asset pool existed
• spent investor money on real estate, personal expenses and a $160,000 horse

These are allegations in a lawsuit, not court findings, and the SEC does not claim that every item above was false. But each claim could have been tested: an insurer can be named and called, a partner can confirm a deal on its own channels, and a listing can be checked on the exchange’s or data site’s own pages.

How to Check a Crypto Announcement: Where to Look

A simple routine helps. First, identify who wrote the announcement and whether it is labeled as paid. Second, list the specific claims and ignore the adjectives. Third, check each claim with the party that would have to confirm it. Fourth, check who holds the supply and when it unlocks. Fifth, look for the legal disclosures that apply where the promotion is aimed, such as the MiCA statement on EU marketing for a token offer or the FCA risk warning on promotions aimed at UK consumers. Finally, wait: a genuine partnership or listing will still be real tomorrow, while countdown pressure is designed to stop you from checking.

The Scale of the Problem

The FBI says crypto investment fraud was the largest source of financial losses reported by Americans in 2025. Not every failed token was a scam, and most press releases are not fraudulent. But the numbers show why an announcement should be treated as a starting point for checks, not as a reason to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are crypto press releases reliable?
A press release is reliable as a record of what a project claims, not as proof that the claims are true. The company writes it and pays to distribute it, and the major wires disclaim responsibility for its accuracy in their terms. Treat each claim in a release as something to check with the party that would have to confirm it.

Do news sites check press releases before publishing them?
Usually not in the way they check their own reporting. Crypto-focused wires sell placement on partner sites, and publishers such as CryptoSlate and Crypto Briefing say press releases are paid announcements, not independent reporting, and that they do not endorse them. Look for a label such as “Press Release” or “Sponsored” and read the disclaimer before treating a release as news.

How can I tell if a crypto partnership is real?
A partnership is confirmed when both companies announce it on channels they control, such as their official newsrooms or verified social media accounts. If only the smaller project mentions the deal, treat it as unconfirmed. In 2025, Helium’s developer paid a $200,000 SEC penalty, without admitting or denying the allegations, after the SEC said it had falsely told investors that major companies used its network.

How do I verify a crypto exchange listing announcement?
Check the exchange’s own announcement page or official social media accounts, not the project’s release. Binance says no listing is ever guaranteed, that it charges no fees for project evaluations or listing applications and that anyone claiming to represent it in exchange for payment is a fraud. Binance also offers a verification tool for links and accounts. A listing that appears only in the project’s own materials is not confirmed.

Do crypto influencers have to disclose paid promotions?
In many cases, yes, but the rules depend on where you are and what is promoted. In the US, the FTC requires endorsers to disclose material connections, and the SEC’s touting rule covers securities. The EU’s MiCA rules require crypto marketing to be identifiable, and the UK’s FCA requires approved promotions with risk warnings. Paid promoters of non-security tokens may face fewer US rules.

What are the biggest red flags in a token announcement?
Common ones are partnerships only one side has announced, exchange listings the exchange has not confirmed, audit badges you cannot find on the auditor’s site, claims of insurance or regulatory approval without documents, guaranteed returns or fixed listing prices, countdown pressure, anonymous teams and unclear insider allocations. Any one of these is a reason to check further before buying.

How do token unlocks affect the price?
Unlocks release previously locked tokens to team members, investors or ecosystem funds, adding supply that holders can sell. A Keyrock study of 16,000 unlock events found that 90% created negative price pressure, that team unlocks caused the steepest drops, about 25%, and that price effects often began about 30 days before the unlock. Unlock calendars show upcoming releases.
