OSMO gained 18.98% in 24 hours to trade at $0.0626 on CoinGecko as of 06:22 UTC on October 27, after Osmosis switched off inflationary token issuance with the passage of on-chain Proposal 1053, “End OSMO Inflationary Emissions.” The Cosmos-based decentralized exchange’s first post-passage daily epoch minted zero new tokens, down from roughly 91,324 a day, the Osmosis team posted on X. Staking rewards now ride entirely on taker fees and transaction fees, not on newly created supply.
The move reprices a structural supply change, not a single day’s trading. OSMO carries a $47.0 million market capitalization at rank 473, with 749.25 million tokens in circulation against a 1 billion maximum.
The token sits 99.4% below its $11.25 all-time high from March 3, 2022, but 137.8% above its $0.0263 all-time low from July 29, 2026. Over the past year OSMO is down 52.3%, and the 24-hour trading volume of $16.47 million is roughly a third of the entire market cap — the kind of ratio that appears when a headline rewrites the supply schedule mid-session.
The Vote: 91.07% Approval Across 104 Million OSMO
The change was not a top-down decision. Mintscan’s tally for proposal 1053 shows the vote closed with 95,127,295 OSMO — 91.07% — voting yes, 9,328,358 OSMO (8.93%) abstaining, and only 2,340 OSMO voting no alongside 1,151 OSMO voting veto. Total participation reached 65.52% against a 30% quorum requirement, across a voting window that opened October 20 and closed October 25, 2026.
In other words, more than 104 million OSMO were cast, and the “no” and “veto” columns together amount to less than one ten-thousandth of the yes column.
The proposal’s mechanics are deliberately blunt. It sets the mint module’s minting_rewards_distribution_start_epoch parameter to 100,000,000 — a value never reached at the rate of one epoch per day, so the module effectively never mints again — and sets distribution_proportions to 100% community pool. The epoch_provisions value is left unchanged, so a raw query still reports the old daily figure, but nothing is actually minted from it.
Where the Daily Minting Went
Before the switch, the mint module distributed about 121,766 OSMO per day, but most of it never entered circulating supply. The full allocation split three ways: staking rewards took 8%, or roughly 9,740 OSMO a day, straight into circulation; the developer vesting release took 25%, roughly 30,440 OSMO a day, into the developer address; and the community pool took the remaining 67%, roughly 81,580 OSMO a day, which did not circulate.
Only the first two buckets — about 40,000 OSMO per day — reached the open market. The community-pool share was a “soft burn”: minted, then parked out of circulation. The staking share added roughly two percentage points to staking APR, while the developer release unlocked pre-minted OSMO to an address set by Proposal 997 that had been untouched since December 2025. Proposal 1053 stops all three buckets at the source.
What the Switch Removes From Circulating Supply
The arithmetic is the part the source does not spell out. If the roughly 40,000 OSMO a day that previously entered circulation now stops, that is about 14.6 million OSMO per year. Against the 749.25 million in circulation, that is just under 1.95% of supply per year that no longer dilutes holders — before counting burns.
The newly minted figure the Osmosis team cited, 91,324 OSMO a day, annualizes to about 33.3 million OSMO, or 4.45% of circulating supply, though most of that had been soft-burned into the community pool rather than sold.
The forum text is explicit about what this flips. “Every burn reduces supply,” the proposal states. “With no new issuance, all OSMO burned from taker fees and ProtoRev revenue directly reduces supply.” Osmosis was already net-deflationary on its own accounting: taker-fee burns and ProtoRev revenue had outpaced issuance over the prior year.
Ending issuance removes the offset, so every burn now works in one direction only, compounding the automated burn mechanism the protocol introduced last year.
The Revenue That Has to Carry Staking Now
The countercase sits in the same document. “Staking rewards are already largely funded by protocol revenue: taker fees and transaction fees,” the proposal argues, and “ending emissions completes the move to a staking yield made entirely of revenue.”
But the roughly 2% APR that issuance supplied does not vanish cleanly — it is “mostly replaced by the 1.7% additional estimated APR from the increased share of taker fees” introduced by Proposal 1052. That is a smaller number than the one it replaces.
The protocol’s own size makes this the real test. Osmosis holds about $11.2 million in total value locked, according to CoinGecko, against the $47 million token market cap. Taker-fee and transaction-fee revenue on an $11 million book has to fund whatever staking yield the chain offers next, and there is no treasury printing press behind it anymore.
Separately, roughly 51.9 million OSMO remain in the developer vesting account — pre-minted at genesis, not newly issued — and any future release now requires a separate governance vote.
OSMO’s Levels After the Jump
On the price side, $0.0626 leaves OSMO in a wide band. The all-time low of $0.0263 from late July is 58% below spot, and the all-time high of $11.25 is a figure that assumes the 2022 market, not this one. A return to even $0.125 would double the $47 million market cap to $94 million; $0.626, a ten-bagger from here, implies about $470 million. Those are small-cap arithmetic — the point is not a target but the ceiling: the token’s upside is no longer being spent on paying stakers in new tokens.
The 19% daily move is, so far, a single day against a token that has bled for a year. The catalyst is real and supply-side, but the follow-through depends on whether staking yield — now purely revenue-funded — holds enough to keep validators bonded and stakers committed. A one-day repricing does not prove that; the next several epochs do.
What to Watch After the First Zero-Mint Epoch
Three signals decide whether this rally extends. First, the staking APR reported in the next epochs — if the revenue-funded figure comes in meaningfully below the 2% it replaced, stakers may redelegate or unbond. Second, OSMO’s circulating supply on explorers should now move sideways or down, since nothing new is minted and burns keep reducing it.
Third, any governance vote over the frozen 51.9 million OSMO in the developer vesting account would be the next supply event worth watching, because it is the only remaining source of new OSMO entering circulation.
Proposal 1053 is the final step of a staged drawdown that began with Proposals 957 and 967, and its effect is now live, not proposed. “No OSMO is minted or released from the first daily epoch after passage,” the proposal states — and the team’s “Flipped the switch” post confirms the first epoch came and went with zero new tokens. The supply side of the OSMO trade has changed. Whether the revenue side can hold it up is the open question the market is now pricing.
