Successful football players in control of the league
Because the National Football League (NFL) season only lasts from August to January, football fans cannot enjoy the game for more than half a year during the off-season. This is due to change next year when a first blockchain-controlled football league will launch.
The project, called Fan-Controlled Football League (FCFL) is constantly developing, and recently it has gotten two new owners, both being successful active NFL players.
The players in question are Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman. They spent their last season at Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers respectively. Both will be team owners, as well as fan captains for two of the eight teams that will be competing in the FCFL. They both have worked together previously, with their most important shared success being the winner of Super Bowl rings for Seattle Seahawks in 2013.
Revolutionary concept
The FCFL is a football league that is controlled by cryptocurrency. New Alchemy, a blockchain company which has helped to create more than 25 different blockchain-based projects, will develop an FCFL-specific digital token system for football fans. It will allow them to buy, sell and trade digital coins, the Fan Access Network (FAN) token.
FAN holders are able to call plays, draft players, hire coaches, create team names and more. The more tokens one has, the bigger his influence on the final decision, such as drafting a player, is. The game is controlled by watchers – something never seen before.
The experience will be made interactive for the fans. This will be achieved by equipping players’ helmets with cameras, using balls with embedded sensors and actively using the footage from the several drones. FCFL has already closed a deal with Twitch to stream the games live on the Amazon-owned platform.
Because the concept is being used for the first time, it remains to be seen what experiments will FCFL organizers make and how bookmakers will involve.
Structure of the league
The league will consist of eight teams. Every game will last an hour long and use a 50-yard field, instead of the usual 100 yards used in the NFL. Professional footballers already playing in the NFL will be team captains. The season will take place during the NFL off-season, which should eliminate any competition between NFL and FCFL.
