Visa’s network carries $14.2 trillion in annual payment volume across more than 175 million merchant locations. Crypto card spending, by the last widely cited measure, runs near $1.5 billion a month. Side by side, the crypto card market is a rounding error against the payments giant, under two tenths of one percent on an annualized basis.
The partnership between Visa and Mesh announced on October 19, 2026 is a direct attempt to close that gap. Mesh, a crypto payments network founded in 2020, will let participating wallets and platforms provision a Visa credential behind the scenes, so a holder can spend straight from an existing crypto or stablecoin balance.
A user taps a standard contactless terminal or checks out online without selling, transferring, or preloading funds. The merchant receives a standard payment and changes nothing at checkout. Mesh describes the arrangement as a “first-of-its-kind” wallet-native payment experience in its announcement.
The mechanics invert the usual order of crypto spending. A stablecoin balance historically had to be cashed out to a bank account and wait, or loaded onto a card tied to a single platform, before it could buy anything. Under the new arrangement, Mesh acts as the program manager.
Mesh handles user onboarding and know-your-customer checks while it orchestrates how each transaction is funded and converted across crypto, stablecoins, and fiat. That keeps the heavy compliance lift off individual wallets, but concentrates it in one intermediary.
A Visa Credential Without a Separate Card
Mesh already counts more than 200 enterprises on its network. Through existing relationships with Kalshi, Tools for Humanity, Félix Pago, Majority and KAST, it says the network reaches hundreds of millions of users. The Visa partnership adds the merchant acceptance side, so a wallet or exchange can offer spend-from-balance without building its own card program.
The consumer experience is the selling point. A Visa credential is provisioned invisibly, so the tap or the online checkout is funded from balances the user already holds, converted at the moment of payment. Nothing moves into a new account, and nothing is preloaded.
“Crypto never had a spending problem — it has a last-mile problem, and until now, closing it meant getting a separate card,” said Bam Azizi, co-founder and chief executive of Mesh.
“Mesh handles the funding and conversion, so a balance becomes purchasing power at the moment of payment, with nothing for the user to move and nothing for the merchant to change,” Azizi added. “We think your money should be spendable right where it already lives. With Visa and Mesh, it is.”
Mesh’s longer-term view extends beyond cards. Over the past year the company joined Paxos’s Global Dollar Network, launched a Mesh Alliance Program uniting more than 50 partners, and released Mesh Wallet, which lets AI agents complete real-world transactions using stablecoins. Visa is the acceptance-side piece of a broader push to make stored value spendable.
A $14.2 Trillion Rail Meets a $1.5 Billion Market
The release pairs two numbers that frame the opportunity. Visa’s acceptance network spans more than 200 countries and territories and processed $14.2 trillion in payments volume in fiscal 2025. Crypto card volumes, citing American Banker, were running near $1.5 billion monthly by late 2025.
Annualized, $1.5 billion a month is $18 billion a year, or about 0.13% of Visa’s fiscal 2025 volume. Spread across the 774 million people that Crypto.com research counted as crypto owners as of June 2026, that is roughly $1.94 of card spending per owner per month.
There are two distinct layers being confused in the payments debate, and the difference matters. Visa’s production move on October 15 settled cross-border business payouts in USDC on the Visa Direct rail, a business-to-business flow. The Mesh deal targets the consumer end, the person holding a balance in a wallet app. Each attack on the last mile is aimed at a different part of the pipeline.
The thesis behind the deal is that friction, not demand, is the binding constraint. Every prior route from a stablecoin balance to fiat spending required the holder to act first. Removing that step, the argument runs, unlocks spending that already exists but has nowhere to go.
“Consumers increasingly expect to use their money however and wherever they choose,” said Rubail Birwadker, global head of growth at Visa. “Working with Mesh helps expand how digital asset balances can connect to the trusted payment experiences consumers and merchants rely on every day.”
What the Announcement Does Not Prove
The release is careful in ways that matter. No participating platform is named as live, and initial availability, supported devices, and participating platforms “will be announced as rollout details are finalized.” Mesh is the program manager, not a direct integration of crypto onto Visa’s settlement rails.
The “first-of-its-kind” label is Mesh’s framing, and the $1.5 billion card figure is a late-2025 estimate, already several months stale. The deeper question is whether demand follows once the rail exists. A large share of crypto holdings sits in accounts treated as investments rather than spending money.
The asset class has spent years being marketed as a store of value. Removing the last mile does not by itself tell us how many of those 774 million owners actually want to pay for a coffee or a train ticket from a balance they had been holding for appreciation.

Mastercard has pushed into the same corridor with a risk-intelligence layer for stablecoin payments, Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security tool. Mesh and Visa are not the only firms trying to connect digital asset balances to global commerce.
The Signal to Watch: Which Wallets Go Live First
The announcement is a framework with the concrete outcomes still to come. The first test is which platforms actually switch on the experience, and whether any of them are large consumer wallets rather than niche programs. Mesh’s existing enterprise base gives it a distribution channel, but going live is a separate step from signing a partnership.
A second signal is regulatory. Mesh as program manager means know-your-customer and onboarding sit with a third party. How smoothly that scales across jurisdictions will determine how fast “anywhere Visa is accepted” becomes true in practice.
For now the gap is the story: a payment network that moves $14.2 trillion a year and a crypto spending market measured in the low billions per month. The Visa and Mesh partnership removes a real piece of friction. Whether it changes the spending behavior of 774 million holders is the question the rollout, not the announcement, will answer.
