Phantom Wallet: A Complete Guide to the Multi-Chain Self-Custodial Wallet

Introduction

Phantom is a self-custodial crypto wallet available as a browser extension and mobile app. Phantom states it is used by more than 20 million people to store, trade, and manage crypto assets across several blockchain networks from a single interface. What began in 2021 as a wallet built specifically for the Solana ecosystem has since grown into a multi-chain product supporting assets on Solana, Ethereum, Bitcoin, and a handful of other networks. This guide explains what Phantom is, which chains and features it actually supports today, how its self-custody model works, and what to check before you rely on it.

What Is Phantom Wallet?

Phantom is built by Phantom Technologies, Inc. as a self-custodial wallet, meaning the person holding the wallet — not Phantom the company — controls the private keys and, by extension, the funds. Phantom’s own positioning describes the product as a “money app” that combines crypto trading, everyday payments, and self-custody in one interface, rather than a narrow single-purpose wallet.

In practice, that means Phantom handles three broad jobs: it stores and displays a user’s crypto and NFTs across supported chains, it provides in-app tools for trading and moving funds, and it manages the cryptographic keys that prove ownership of those assets — without Phantom itself ever holding a copy of those keys.

Which Blockchains Does Phantom Support?

Phantom is often described loosely as “a Solana wallet,” a hangover from its original 2021 launch. That description is outdated: Phantom expanded to support Ethereum and Polygon in May 2023, and later added Base in November 2024. As of this writing, Phantom’s own support documentation lists the following networks as actively supported:

• Solana
• Ethereum
• Bitcoin (Native SegWit and Taproot address types)
• Base
• Polygon
• Robinhood Chain
• Sui
• Monad
• HyperEVM

Phantom’s documentation also explicitly lists networks it does not support, including BSC, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Unichain, and Linea. If you accidentally send tokens to Phantom on one of these unsupported networks, Phantom’s own guidance is to recover them using a separate EVM-compatible wallet rather than through Phantom directly.

This list is not fixed. Phantom has added networks several times since 2021, and it maintains a public feature-request channel for users to ask for additional chains. Anyone relying on Phantom for a specific network should check Phantom’s current supported-networks documentation directly rather than assuming today’s list will still be accurate months from now.

How Does Self-Custody Work in Phantom?

Self-custody is the core design decision behind Phantom: only the wallet holder controls the private keys, and Phantom the company has no access to them and cannot recover them if lost. This is the same trade-off every non-custodial wallet makes — full control in exchange for full responsibility.

Phantom offers two distinct ways to create a wallet, and the choice affects how account recovery works:

1. Social login (Google or Apple account). The user signs in with an existing Google or Apple account and sets a 4-digit PIN. This is available on both mobile and the browser extension.
2. Secret Recovery Phrase. Available only through the browser extension, this method generates a 12-word recovery phrase that gives the holder full, independent control of the wallet. Phantom explicitly instructs users to write this phrase down and store it offline — it is never stored by Phantom and cannot be reissued if lost. A recovery phrase created this way can later be imported into the Phantom mobile app.

Both methods are self-custodial: even the social-login option does not give Phantom custody of funds, since the underlying keys are still generated and held client-side. The distinction is about account recovery UX, not about who ultimately controls the assets.

For additional protection, Phantom also supports connecting a Ledger hardware wallet, which keeps private keys on a separate physical device rather than the browser or phone.

What Features Does Phantom Offer Beyond Storage?

Phantom has expanded well past basic send-and-receive functionality. Its current feature set spans several categories:

• Trading tools. Users can buy and sell crypto directly in the app, browse trending tokens and top traders through a discovery/”Explore” feature, and access more advanced trading through a desktop-focused Terminal product.
• Prediction Markets and Perpetual futures (“Perps”). Phantom has built in-app access to prediction markets for trading on real-world event outcomes, and a perpetual futures product for leveraged long/short positions.
• NFT support. Phantom displays and manages NFTs across supported chains alongside fungible tokens.
• Token swaps. Users can swap between supported assets without leaving the app.
• “Cash” — everyday money movement. Phantom offers a feature set for sending money, paying other people, and spending funds wherever Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Visa is accepted. This includes a Visa-branded prepaid card. Card issuance is handled by regulated third parties — the card is issued by Lead Bank under Visa licensing, with Bridge Ventures LLC acting as program manager — not by Phantom directly, which is typical for fintech products that offer card services without holding a banking charter themselves.
• Security tooling. Phantom includes automatic scam-detection that flags malicious transactions before they’re signed, alongside the self-custody and Ledger-support features described above.

Is Phantom Wallet Safe?

So, is Phantom Wallet safe? Generally, yes — in the same sense any well-built self-custodial wallet is — though how safe it stays depends heavily on how carefully you handle your own keys, not just on Phantom’s code. Phantom itself never gains access to a user’s private keys or Secret Recovery Phrase, so a compromise of Phantom’s own servers cannot directly expose an individual user’s funds the way a breach of a custodial exchange might.

Phantom’s specific safety features include:

• Self-custodial key storage. Keys are generated and held on the user’s device (or a connected Ledger), never on Phantom’s servers.
• Automatic scam detection. Phantom flags known malicious contracts and phishing transactions before a user signs them, based on continuously updated threat data.
• Ledger hardware wallet support. Users who want keys isolated from their browser or phone entirely can connect a Ledger device through Phantom.
• No company-side recovery, by design. This is a safety trade-off, not a flaw: Phantom cannot be socially engineered or hacked into handing over funds it never holds. The cost is that a lost Secret Recovery Phrase means permanent loss of access — Phantom has no backdoor to restore it.

The realistic risks with Phantom are the same ones that apply to every self-custodial wallet: phishing sites that imitate Phantom’s interface, fake browser extensions listed under similar names, and social-engineering attempts to extract a Secret Recovery Phrase. Phantom explicitly states its support staff will never DM users or ask for a recovery phrase — a direct warning against the most common scam vector wallet users encounter. In short, Phantom’s own security model is sound; most real-world “is Phantom safe” incidents trace back to user-side phishing rather than a flaw in Phantom itself.

Phantom vs. Other Self-Custodial Wallets

Phantom’s closest comparison point is other multi-chain, non-custodial software wallets rather than single-chain or hardware-only products. Against a single-chain EVM wallet, Phantom’s differentiator is native Solana and Bitcoin support alongside Ethereum-family chains, in one interface — a similar multi-chain approach to what 1inch Wallet offers on the EVM side, though Phantom extends that reach to non-EVM chains as well. Against a wallet built around a narrower feature set, such as Trust Wallet, the distinction comes down to how much in-app functionality (Prediction Markets, Perps, Cash) is bundled versus kept minimal.

Compared to a hardware wallet like Tangem, Phantom trades some physical-key isolation for convenience and built-in trading/Cash features — the two approaches are complementary rather than strictly competing, since Phantom itself supports pairing with a Ledger device for users who want both software convenience and hardware-level key isolation.
