Social content platform Reddit is appealing to its 466,000 subscribers to propose ideas in scaling its Community Points program. The Community Points is the site’s r/Ethereum subreddit’s newly-launched crypto-rewards system.
Reddit announced in a blog post on June 19, 2020; it had partnered with the Ethereum Foundation to call for projects building Ethereum scaling solutions. The post titled the “Great Reddit Scaling Bake-Off” is appealing to users to present their Ethereum scaling projects.
Accumulate Points Based On Posts and Comments
According to the post, the scaling solutions are supposed to bring ‘Community Points’ to the MainNet. Community Points is the latest addition to the social media platform that enables users to accumulate points based on their posts and comments. The points could be used to accrue other premium features on the platform. Underscoring the purpose of the partnership, the post states:
“In conjunction with the Ethereum Foundation, Reddit is inviting Ethereum scaling projects to show the community how your scaling solution can be used to bring Community Points to MainNet […] our goal is to find a solution that will support hundreds of thousands of Community Points users on MainNet today and can eventually scale to all of Reddit.”
Complete Ownership and Control
Reddit anticipates creating a scaling proof of concept with the ability to meet a variety of requirements, including decentralization and giving users complete ownership and control of their points. As per the post, users have until July 31, 2020, to submit a proof-of-concept demo, after which Reddit will update the community later in September. According to Reddit, existing scaling solutions seem to incline towards “optimizing for transfers.” The post further said:
“Many of these designs don’t take into consideration the costs of obtaining tokens or entering the scaling system […] Community Points distributions have cost an order of magnitude more gas than all other operations combined, primarily due to on-chain storage costs associated with onboarding new users.”
No Prize Be Given
The platform has requested experts to provide commentary on proposals submitted by other community members with a view of better understanding trade-offs resulting from other solutions. The submitted demos will need to have “a live proof of concept showing hundreds of thousands of transactions.” They will also require source code, detailed breakdown of cost estimates, APIs, and how to operate the proposed scaling architectures.
The demos should be able to handle 100,000 point claims, 25,000 subscriptions, 75,000 one-off point burns, and 100,000 transfers over five days, proposals. Reddit pointed out that the applicants would gain fame; however, no prize would be given to the chosen one. So far, over 17,000 Redditors have registered.
