In El Zonte, the local populace began accepting Bitcoin as payment without the involvement of any authorities. Whether it’s purchases at beach huts or costs for local services, this rural village declared BTC its legal cash first. After the BTC movement gained traction in El Salvador, the nation’s government, led by President Nayib Bukele, took advantage of the digital currency’s popularity by designating it legal money in the country.
The Bitcoin Coastal initiative began three years ago, after an anonymous BTC contribution to the beach village of El Zonte. Following that, local businesses and visitors began to use BTC to complete transactions in beach huts and for other local costs. Employees in the town are compensated in digital currency. As a result, the moniker Bitcoin Beach was established as an open tribute to the town’s willingness to take BTC as payment.
El Salvador now seeks to boost the beach’s appeal. Because the city is a major destination for surfers from all over the world, widespread acceptance of digital money is feasible. Surfers of all levels are attracted to the spot. Surfing has already been officially included to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As a result, world-class surfers will flock to the location.
