The Celo Foundation and Google Cloud have combined to improve Celo network safety. Today, it was announced that Google Cloud is running a validator on the Celo platform, strengthening the network as a whole.
Google Cloud and the Celo Foundation have been working together since April, and this new agreement strengthens that relationship. Previously, the two organizations collaborated to aid sustainability-oriented entrepreneurs in the Celo ecosystem. These new businesses were given access to Google Cloud’s cloud infrastructure to create and expand Web3 apps. In addition, cLabs, the primary developer of the Celo blockchain, has relied on Google Cloud for a long time.
Google Cloud has joined a long list of validators on the Celo network, which includes industry heavyweights like Deutsche Telekom. These validators, together with others in the ecosystem, such as impactMarket (a protocol for human empowerment), are trying to increase the number of people using blockchain technology to one billion.
On Monday, the Celo community decided by voting overwhelmingly in favor of cLabs’ proposal to migrate Celo from a standalone layer-1 blockchain to an Ethereum layer-2 solution. This change aims to improve the scalability, security, and practicality of the Ethereum ecosystem. A distributed sequencer, run by Celo’s current validator set and featuring off-chain data access via EigenLayer, is among the technical improvements in this update.
What’s in store?
cLabs will use Google Cloud’s Blockchain Node Engine, a fully managed node-hosting solution, to speed up and simplify the migration to the Ethereum ecosystem. Through the Blockchain Node Engine, Celo network participants can save time on node operations and enjoy the benefits of fast, safe transaction relays without waiting for nodes to synchronize. Integrating Celo 2.0 into the Ethereum network is an effort to improve communication and cooperation between users of both systems.
There are already over a thousand initiatives in over 150 countries that make up the Celo ecosystem. Community inclusion currencies (CICs) from Grassroots Economics and universal basic income distribution dApp GoodDollar are examples of such uses. With GoodDollar’s 80,000 daily users and Grassroots Economics’ CICs’ 20,000 users in 180 countries, it’s clear that these dApps have a real-world impact.
The Head of Ecosystem Growth at the Celo Foundation, Xochitl Cazador, has expressed appreciation to Google Cloud for their relationship, pointing out that both organizations aim to use blockchain technology to create long-term solutions to global problems. Google Cloud’s Director of Digital Assets, Carlos Arena, recently reaffirmed the firm’s dedication to bolstering the Web3 ecosystem by providing critical resources for app scalability.Â
