Quick Take
1. Hyperliquid releases 14,175,778 HYPE on August 29, worth roughly $1.2 billion, its largest monthly unlock since the November 2024 launch and about 1.4% of total supply.
2. Insiders and early investors receive 46.6% of the release, against 46.3% to the community and 7% to the Hyper Foundation, a split that differs materially from the August 6 unlock this site covered.
3. HYPE trades at $81.95, down 3.28% on the day but still 8.33% higher on the week, having set a record above $83 earlier this week.
Hyperliquid’s largest scheduled token release arrives on August 29, three days after HYPE reached an all-time high. The event puts 14,175,778 tokens into circulation, roughly $1.2 billion at current prices, and the destination of those tokens matters more than the headline figure.
HYPE trades at $81.95, down 3.28% over 24 hours, per CoinGecko. The broader market is soft, with 87 of the QC 100 constituents declining and total crypto capitalization at $2.64 trillion.
How big is the August 29 Hyperliquid unlock?
14,175,778 HYPE, about 1.4% of the one billion total supply and roughly 2.7% of current market capitalization, worth approximately $1.2 billion.
That is the largest of Hyperliquid’s monthly releases since the token launched in November 2024. The protocol has followed a fixed calendar since then, freeing a slice of supply each month to three recipient groups. Unlock schedules are published by the project and tracked by aggregators including DefiLlama, though this site has documented that tracker figures frequently disagree with each other and with project documentation, so the vesting docs remain the authoritative source.
Who receives the tokens?
Insiders take the largest single share at 46.6%, with 46.3% going to the community through grants, rewards and airdrops, and 7% to the Hyper Foundation.
A token unlock is the scheduled release of previously locked tokens into circulation, and its price impact depends far more on who receives them than on how many are released. Tokens arriving in a treasury or foundation wallet have no seller attached on day one. Tokens vesting to early investors do, because funds have return targets and redemption calendars.
This is the distinction this site has applied across every unlock it has covered, and it produces a different answer here than it did three weeks ago.
How does this compare to the August 6 unlock?
The recipients are different, and that is the whole comparison.
On August 7 this site reported on Hyperliquid’s previous release, which the market had feared for three weeks as a $620 million event. The committed claim came to roughly $22.65 million, a small fraction of what the schedule permitted, and HYPE rose 0.7% the following day. We wrote at the time that the shadow had been bigger than the monster, and that soft landings are a pattern rather than a promise.
August 29 tests that caveat. The share going to early investors is the category that historically carries sellers, and the dollar value is roughly double the August headline at a price 47% higher.
Two boundaries on that reading. First, an unlock releases tokens rather than selling them, and recipients are not obliged to act immediately. Second, a scheduled monthly event that has occurred every month since launch is anticipated supply, and anticipated supply is usually priced before it arrives rather than on the day.
What happened after previous Hyperliquid unlocks?
Mixed results, with no consistent direction. HYPE fell 14.1% after May’s release, gained 1% in June, and declined 7% in July.
That record is the most useful thing available for setting expectations. Three of the last four monthly unlocks produced a decline, one produced a small gain, and none produced a collapse. A token that has absorbed nine consecutive monthly releases while climbing from single digits to above $80 is not one the market treats as structurally fragile.
The counterweight is that this release is larger than any of those, both in token count and in dollar value.
Why is HYPE near record highs going into it?
Two catalysts arrived last week and neither has been fully resolved.
President Trump said the CFTC is working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a compliant manner, opening the prospect of a market the protocol has been excluded from entirely. Separately, Coinbase added 50x perpetual futures to its Base app using Hyperliquid’s infrastructure, which pushes the protocol further into mainstream trading rails.
The regulatory item is a stated intention rather than a rule, with no published timeline. Anyone pricing it as settled is pricing an outcome that has not happened. Any formal action would appear on the CFTC’s own site before it appears in commentary.
What levels matter around the unlock?
The record near $83.50 above, and the $74 to $76 support zone below that buyers have defended through this advance.
If the release is absorbed the way previous ones have been, the relevant question is whether HYPE can establish a range above $80 rather than whether it survives the day. If insider distribution does materialise, the $74 to $76 zone is where the market finds out how deep the bid is. Watching whether released tokens move to exchanges in the days after, which is visible on-chain, tells you more than the countdown clock does.
Bottom line
Hyperliquid releases 14.18 million HYPE worth roughly $1.2 billion on August 29, with 46.6% going to insiders and early investors, making it structurally different from the August 6 unlock that landed softly and larger than any monthly release since launch.
The lesson this site has drawn repeatedly is that unlock size is the least informative number in the announcement. The recipient split is the one to read, and this time it points the other way. That does not guarantee a decline, and the previous nine releases suggest the market has learned to absorb them. It does mean the soft landing in August was not a template.
