For two and a half years, the quiet machinery of Wall Street settlement — the ledger where America’s stocks, exchange-traded funds and Treasury securities sit in street name — has been preparing for a moment that arrived on Wednesday. On October 28, The Depository Trust Company switched on its tokenization service, and with it a first batch of 34 securities worth roughly $30 trillion in market value became available to be represented as digital tokens that can move between registered wallets around the clock. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, DTC’s parent, framed the launch in its announcement as the day tokenized securities entered regulated financial markets through the same post-trade infrastructure that has cleared and settled American equities for decades.
The number that frames the moment is not the token count. It is the custody base. DTC holds more than $114 trillion in assets under custody, according to the same release, and the 34 securities it made eligible at launch — select large-cap names from the Russell 1000, a group of ETFs, and U.S. Treasury bills, notes and bonds — account for about $30 trillion of that pile. Roughly one in every four dollars DTC holds under custody can now, in principle, be converted into a tokenized twin.
A $114 Trillion Custodian Flips the Switch
DTC is the settlement backbone the reader rarely sees. When an American investor buys a stock, the shares are not typically registered in the buyer’s name; they sit in “street name” at DTC, which keeps the official book and moves the security behind the trade. That is why the launch matters beyond crypto circles. The organization that already touches most of the U.S. equities and Treasury market is now minting digital representations of those same assets rather than asking an unregulated parallel system to do it.
The path here was measured. In December 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission gave DTC a no-action letter authorizing it to tokenize Russell 1000 constituents, ETFs tracking major indices, and U.S. Treasury securities. About seven months later, in July 2026, DTCC and more than 30 firms completed initial limited-production trades — a dry run that moved real, DTC-custodied assets as tokens before the broader switch-on. The launch on October 28 is the delivery of that promise, not the announcement of it. For a fuller picture of how the service works, see our explainer on what the DTCC Tokenization Service actually does.
Twenty Firms, Two Networks and the Mechanics of a Digital Twin
Day one is narrower than the eventual ambition, and the roster tells the story. Twenty DTC participants have signed agreements to use the service: Alpaca, Apex Clearing Corporation, Barclays, Bank of America, BNP Paribas, Brown Brothers Harriman, Citadel Securities, Citi, Clear Street, DriveWealth, Edward Jones, Fidelity Investments, Interchange Clearing, J.P. Morgan, Marex, Mirae Asset Securities (USA) Inc., Morgan Stanley, State Street, UBS and Velocity Capital LLC. Future users, DTCC said, will be onboarded on a rolling basis.
The tokens are not a new asset class. Each one is a tokenized entitlement backed one-to-one by a security held at DTC, carrying the same CUSIP identifier, the same ownership rights and the same investor protections as the book-entry position it mirrors. When a token moves between two registered wallets, that transfer is the settlement — no wait for the next business day. The service is live on two networks at launch: the Canton Network, under the CIP-56 token standard, and DTCC’s own private Besu network using ERC-20. Conversion between traditional and tokenized form runs from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time on business days and targets fifteen minutes or less per order, while intra-chain transfers between registered wallets can happen 24/7.
“Today marks the culmination of years of work to bring tokenized securities into a regulated framework supported by trusted market infrastructure,” said Frank La Salla, President and CEO of DTCC, in the release. He said the launch extends DTC’s resiliency, governance and operational standards into digital markets, laying the groundwork for banks and brokers to use tokenized assets at scale.
What the Service Does Not Do Yet
The launch is real, but it is not a fully programmable money market. The conversion window — 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern — means the headline promise of around-the-clock movement is currently true only within a single chain, not across chains. A position moving from Canton to Besu, or from tokenized form back to conventional book-entry, has to pass through DTC’s conversion service during business hours. Settlement arrangements beyond the transfer itself are left to the participants, and DTCC’s own books and records remain the official ledger; the token is a representation, not a replacement, of the record.
The participant list also shows who is waiting. BNY, the largest custody bank in the country, and Goldman Sachs, which took part in July’s trial trades, are not among the twenty signatories announced this week. Their absence does not mean the service failed; it means adoption is staged. The question of what a tokenized stock can actually do for a trader — and where the limits still are — is the same question we unpacked in our guide to what tokenized stocks are.
“The breadth of engagement across traditional finance and digital asset markets demonstrates that the industry is ready to move beyond experimentation and toward practical adoption,” said Brian Steele, Managing Director and President of Clearing & Securities Services at DTCC. “Working with more than 150 firms in our Industry Working Group, we built a service designed to support institutional use of tokenized securities at scale within a trusted operational framework.”
The Arithmetic Behind the Milestone
Strip the press-release framing and three ratios hold up. First, the $30 trillion of eligible securities is about 26% of the $114 trillion DTC holds under custody — a quarter of the American securities ledger is now technically tokenizable, concentrated in just 34 large-cap names and a handful of ETFs and Treasury issues. Second, twenty signed participants out of more than 150 firms that advised on the design works out to roughly one in seven — evidence that the industry wanted a seat at the drafting table before it put its own name on the launch. Third, the settlement math is the sharpest change: a conventional equity trade settles on the next business day, while a tokenized transfer clears the moment it moves, and the conversion path targets fifteen minutes. That is the difference between overnight and effectively immediate.
The ecosystem around the service is wider than the twenty participants. DTCC named a collaborator group that includes BitGo Bank & Trust, Blockdaemon, Broadridge, DFNS, DRW, Fireblocks, HIFI, Kaleido, Matter Labs, Ondo, Prometheum Capital, Talos, Taurus, Tradeweb, Transcend and Virtu — wallet providers, technology firms and trading venues that will handle custody, connectivity and on-chain reference data as the service scales.
“Today’s launch demonstrates what can be achieved through sustained industry collaboration, regulatory engagement and a disciplined approach to innovation,” said Nadine Chakar, Managing Director and Global Head of DTCC Digital Assets. “This is only the beginning of DTCC’s ultimate goal to build the Web3 ecosystem of the future that bridges established, trusted market infrastructure and digital ledger technology.”
The 2027 Roadmap and the Signals to Watch
The service’s own roadmap marks what comes next: Stellar and Circle’s Arc blockchain join in 2027, more securities are added across the Russell 1000, ETFs and Treasuries, and the platform gains single sign-on and maker-checker controls. Further out, DTCC lists consolidated stock records spanning book-entry and on-chain positions, on-chain netting and digital cash settlement, and equity and ETF corporate-actions servicing.
The observable signal, then, is not the launch headline but what follows it. Watch whether the twenty participants actually route meaningful volume through tokenized form rather than keeping the service as a compliance exercise, whether BNY and Goldman join in the first half of 2027, and whether on-chain cash settlement — the feature that would let the tokenized trade settle end to end without touching conventional rails — moves from roadmap language to a working date. Those are the markers that will separate a foundational switch-on from a milestone that Wall Street adopted only on paper.
