Crypto Fear and Greed Index Today: 37 (Fear) and How to Read It

Last Updated: November 2, 2026

Today’s reading: Alternative.me’s Crypto Fear & Greed Index is at 37 (Fear) on November 2, 2026, up from 34 a day earlier and 30 on October 30 and 31, while CoinMarketCap’s index reads 36 (Fear). Both gauges fell into Fear after the October 29 Binance hack. The full breakdown, with yesterday, last week, last month and 2026 history, is below.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a single number between 0 and 100 that compresses the emotional state of the crypto market into one readable signal. Below 50, the market leans fearful. Above 50, it leans greedy. The closer the score is to either extreme, the more one-sided market sentiment has become, and those extremes are where the index earns its keep.

Two providers dominate: Alternative.me publishes the most widely cited version, built around Bitcoin signals. CoinMarketCap (CMC) runs its own variant with broader asset coverage. Their inputs differ: Alternative.me blends the six signals below, while CMC uses five components of its own.

• Volatility: how sharply prices are swinging relative to recent averages
• Market momentum and volume: whether buying pressure is accelerating or fading
• Social media sentiment: the tone and volume of crypto conversation on platforms like X (formerly Twitter)
• Surveys: periodic polls of market participants (Alternative.me’s are currently paused)
• Bitcoin dominance: BTC’s share of total crypto market cap
• Google Trends: search interest in crypto-related terms

The original Fear & Greed Index was built by CNN for traditional markets, using seven market indicators to compress investor emotion into one score. The crypto version adapted that framework for a market that moves faster, trades 24/7, and is far more sentiment-driven than equities.

Key Takeaways

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is most useful at extremes, where it signals one-sided positioning, but it requires price, volume, and derivatives confirmation before driving any trading or investment decision.

What is the crypto fear and greed index reading today?

As of November 2, 2026, Alternative.me’s Crypto Fear & Greed Index reads 37, in the Fear band, up from 34 a day earlier. The index fell 21 points in one day, from 51 on October 29 to 30 on October 30, after Binance disclosed a hot wallet hack of about $6.3 billion and Bitcoin dropped to its lowest level since mid-September, a move explained in why crypto is down today. Bitcoin trades near $77,800. CoinMarketCap’s index, which uses different inputs and updates during the day, reads 36, also in its Fear band.

The two gauges split for most of October and now agree. Alternative.me printed Greed on 20 of October’s 31 days, while CoinMarketCap’s index stayed in its Neutral band for most of the month, and both moved into Fear after the Binance hack. Part of the gap is definitional, because CoinMarketCap counts everything from 40 to 60 as Neutral, and part comes from different inputs, explained below. We looked at a similar split when two fear and greed indexes gave answers 18 points apart.

The October 30 reading of 30 was Alternative.me’s first in the Fear band since August 19, ending a run of 71 days without Fear. The index has not printed Extreme Fear, 25 or lower, since August 6. Dates follow Alternative.me’s daily UTC timestamps, and the provider publishes a fresh score each day. Our crypto market today page tracks the index every day alongside prices and fund flows, and our Bitcoin price today page follows BTC’s daily move.

How has the crypto fear and greed index moved in 2026?

Through November 2, Alternative.me’s index has averaged 33 in 2026, against 49 for all of 2025. Extreme Fear accounted for 137 of this year’s 306 daily readings, nearly half, and none since August 6. Between January 15 and August 20, the index did not print a single Greed reading.

The turn into Greed came abruptly. The score jumped from 46 on August 19 to 62 the next day and stayed at 47 or higher for ten weeks. September’s average of 67 was the highest for any month since July 2025, and October held in the Greed band on 20 of its 31 days. The run ended with the Binance hack: the index fell from 51 on October 29 to 30 on October 30, and Bitcoin closed October down about 7.3%, still well below its October 2025 record above $126,000.

How is the crypto fear and greed index calculated?

Each input gets normalized to a 0-100 scale, then the components are blended using fixed weights to produce a composite score. Alternative.me publishes its weights on the index page:

The volatility and momentum components carry the most weight because they reflect actual market behavior rather than stated opinion. High volatility relative to recent history pushes the score toward fear; strong buying momentum relative to baseline pushes it toward greed. Dominance works the same way: Alternative.me reads a rising Bitcoin share as fear, because money is retreating from speculative altcoins, and a falling share as greed.

CoinMarketCap’s index uses a different mix of five components: price momentum of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap (excluding stablecoins), implied volatility from the Volmex BVIV and EVIV indices, the put/call ratio in Bitcoin and Ethereum options, the stablecoin supply ratio, and CoinMarketCap’s own search and user-engagement data. Different inputs are why the two indexes can disagree on the same day, as they did on October 22 (68 versus 48).

Moving averages matter here. Alternative.me compares current volatility, volume, and momentum with their 30-day and 90-day averages, so the score measures how unusual today’s market is against its recent baseline. A crash after a calm stretch registers as a large deviation and can drag the score down sharply, while the same move in an already volatile month may register far less.

Pro Tip: Before applying any index reading to an altcoin-heavy portfolio, check whether the provider is Bitcoin-centric. Alternative.me’s model relies on BTC inputs (volatility, momentum, dominance, and Google Trends), so a score of 20 during a Bitcoin selloff may not reflect what’s happening in mid-cap DeFi tokens at all.

Survey data is worth flagging separately. Alternative.me lists its 15% survey component as paused but does not say how that weight is reallocated. Always check the provider’s current methodology page before assuming the weights above apply exactly.

What do specific scores actually mean?

Alternative.me labels each daily score with one of five bands:

• 0-25, Extreme Fear: Panic selling, capitulation, or a macro shock. Historically where contrarian buyers look hardest.
• 26-46, Fear: Bearish sentiment dominates. Buyers are cautious; sellers are active.
• 47-54, Neutral: No strong directional signal. The market is roughly balanced between bulls and bears.
• 55-75, Greed: Optimism is running. Momentum is positive, but crowding risk is building.
• 76-100, Extreme Greed: Euphoria. Retail FOMO is typically elevated; risk of a sharp reversal is higher.

CoinMarketCap uses five equal bands instead: 0 to 20 is Extreme Fear, 20 to 40 Fear, 40 to 60 Neutral, 60 to 80 Greed and 80 to 100 Extreme Greed. A score of 55 is therefore Greed on Alternative.me but Neutral on CoinMarketCap, so check which index a headline is quoting before comparing numbers.

Readings near 50 are often the least useful. When the score sits in the Neutral band, the index is essentially saying the market is mixed, which you probably already knew. The signal sharpens at the extremes, where positioning becomes one-sided.

Two brief scenarios illustrate why context matters even within the same band:

Score of 12 with falling volume: Volume is drying up alongside the fear reading, suggesting genuine capitulation rather than a brief panic. Historically, low-volume extreme fear has preceded some of the stronger recovery rallies, but confirmation from price structure is still required before acting.

Score of 82 with parabolic volume: Greed is high and buying volume is surging. This combination has often preceded sharp corrections, because it signals that late buyers are piling in at elevated prices.

A score of 82 on low volume tells a different story: it may reflect thin, illiquid optimism rather than a crowded top. Same number, different risk profile.

How far has crypto sentiment swung in past cycles?

Alternative.me has published the index daily since 2018, and the score has touched 95 near the top of the scale and 5 near the bottom. These are the readings that stand out:

Dates follow Alternative.me’s daily UTC timestamps.

Two patterns stand out. First, extreme fear can outlast the selloff that caused it. Every daily reading in February 2026 landed in Extreme Fear, and the two lowest scores came six and 17 days after Bitcoin’s drop to $60,000, not on the day of the price low.

Second, market tops do not always look euphoric. When Bitcoin set its all-time high on October 6, 2025, the index had peaked at 74 a day earlier, just short of the Extreme Greed band, and the 12 months since have produced only one Extreme Greed reading. A sentiment gauge that stayed out of Extreme Greed at the price peak is a reminder to treat its signals as context, not timing.

How do you actually use the fear and greed index?

The index works best as a filter, not a trigger. Here’s how to apply it across different use cases.

Common applications:

• Contrarian entry signal: Extreme fear readings have historically appeared near market lows, making them a prompt to look for entry setups, not to buy blindly but to start watching more closely.
• Exposure trimming: Extreme greed readings are a prompt to review position sizes, tighten stops, or take partial profits. Again, they are not a sell signal on their own.
• Emotional sanity check: If you feel the urge to buy aggressively when the score is 85, the index is telling you the crowd already agrees with you. That’s worth pausing over.

Step-by-step decision rules for short-term traders:

1. Check the current index score and note whether it’s in an extreme band (25 or lower, or 76 or higher).
2. Confirm the price trend direction using a simple tool like a 20-day moving average or recent higher-highs/lower-lows structure.
3. Check spot volume: is it expanding or contracting relative to the prior week?
4. Look at derivatives data: funding rates and open interest on perpetual futures tell you whether leveraged traders are positioned in the same direction as the sentiment reading.
5. Only act if at least two of the three confirmations (trend, volume, derivatives) align with the index signal.

For longer-term investors, the rules simplify:

1. Use extreme fear readings (25 or lower) as a prompt to dollar-cost average or add to core positions, not to time a single entry.
2. Use extreme greed readings (76 or higher) as a prompt to rebalance toward target allocations, not to exit entirely.
3. Ignore readings between 30 and 70 for portfolio-level decisions.

A real-world case: when historic fear gripped Bitcoin sentiment after a 1,638 BTC sale in early August 2026, Santiment’s data showed deep fear while Alternative.me’s index held between 25 and 30. Two sentiment gauges can disagree on how deep the fear runs, which is one more reason to wait for price and volume confirmation before acting.

How predictive is the index, really?

The honest answer: better at describing the present than predicting the future.

CFGI reports that its own index matched same-day market direction 79% of the time, while agreement with the next day’s move fell to 49%, close to a coin flip. That gap is the key insight. The index reflects current sentiment well. It does not reliably forecast what happens tomorrow.

Several structural limitations explain the predictive ceiling:

• Bitcoin dominance bias: Providers like Alternative.me weight BTC signals heavily. During altcoin-led rallies or sector rotations, the index can read fear while specific assets are surging.
• Social media noise: Engagement metrics on X and Reddit can be gamed or distorted by coordinated campaigns, inflating the social component.
• Survey gaps: When providers pause polling, the published weights no longer describe exactly how the live score is built.
• Prolonged extremes: During strong bull or bear trends, the index can stay in extreme territory for weeks. A score of 80 in month one of a bull run looks different from a score of 80 in month twelve.

Backtests also carry methodological risks. Lookahead bias, where a test uses information that was not available at the time, and cherry-picked time windows that make the signal look good are both common in sentiment studies. Sample selection matters too: a backtest covering only 2020-2021 tends to show strong contrarian returns because that period had sharp V-shaped recoveries. A backtest including 2018 or 2022 tells a harder story.

Macro events can also override sentiment entirely. CPI releases and other macro data points have moved Bitcoin and altcoins sharply regardless of where the index sat beforehand.

Where can you find live and historical index data?

Two providers are the practical starting points for most readers.

Alternative.me publishes one Crypto Fear & Greed Index reading per day on its dedicated page, with a historical chart and a free public API that returns current and historical scores in JSON format. No authentication is required for basic queries.

CoinMarketCap runs its own CMC Crypto Fear and Greed Index, visible on its market overview pages. CMC’s version incorporates a broader asset universe than Alternative.me’s Bitcoin-centric model, which can produce different readings on the same day.

CFGI (cfgi.io) takes a different approach entirely: per-asset scoring across hundreds of crypto and stock assets, refreshed every 15 minutes. If you’re managing a multi-asset portfolio, per-asset scores reveal divergences that a market-average number hides.

Steps to pull data via API (general approach, no credentials needed for Alternative.me’s public endpoint):

1. Send a GET request to Alternative.me’s endpoint, https://api.alternative.me/fng/.
2. Set the limit parameter: limit=30 returns the last 30 days, and limit=0 returns the full history.
3. Parse the returned JSON for the value (score) and value_classification (band label) fields.
4. Verify the timestamp field before using the data: some aggregators cache scores and may display a reading that’s hours old.

Update frequency varies by provider: Alternative.me publishes once a day, while CFGI refreshes every 15 minutes. Always check the timestamp on any score you’re acting on, especially during fast-moving markets where sentiment can shift within hours.

The same endpoint also offers a CSV output option (format=csv) for spreadsheet work. For programmatic access to longer time series, the API with a high limit value is the cleaner option.

What are the real limits of this index?

The index is a useful tool with a specific job. Outside that job, it misleads more than it helps.

Core limitations:

• Low short-term predictive power: next-day direction is close to random based on available observations
• Bitcoin-centric design skews readings during altcoin-led market moves
• Social media inputs are vulnerable to manipulation and coordinated noise
• Survey components have been paused by some providers, with reweighting rarely explained
• Mid-range readings (roughly 30-70) carry little actionable signal
• Prolonged trends can keep the index in extreme territory, making contrarian signals premature

Confirmation checklist before acting on an extreme reading:

1. Is the price trend aligned with the sentiment signal (downtrend during extreme fear, uptrend during extreme greed)?
2. Is spot volume expanding or contracting, and in which direction?
3. What are perpetual futures funding rates showing? Negative funding during extreme fear strengthens the contrarian case.
4. Are on-chain metrics (exchange inflows/outflows, large-holder behavior) consistent with the sentiment reading? Tools like blockchain explorers let you verify on-chain signals directly.
5. Is there a macro event (Fed decision, CPI print, regulatory news) scheduled that could override sentiment entirely?

Pro Tip: Set a personal rule: never act on a fear or greed reading alone. Write down the index score, the price trend, the volume reading, and the funding rate before making any decision. If the score and at least two of the other three point the same way, the signal is worth taking seriously. If only the score does, it’s noise.

The index is a crowd-behavior snapshot, not a market oracle. Used as a filter alongside liquidity, derivatives, and on-chain data, it adds genuine context. It is also one input in our crypto bear-market confirmation framework, which pairs sentiment with price structure, flows, and on-chain profitability. Used as a standalone buy/sell trigger, it produces the kind of false confidence that tends to be most expensive at exactly the wrong moments.

A note from Blockchainreporter

At Blockchainreporter, tracking sentiment alongside price data is part of how we cover crypto markets daily. The Fear & Greed Index appears regularly in our live market coverage because it gives readers a fast read on crowd psychology at any given moment, not as a prediction but as context for the price action we’re reporting. When the index hits extremes, our coverage tends to dig deeper: what’s driving the fear or greed, whether on-chain data confirms it, and what historical analogs look like. That combination of sentiment context and hard data is what separates useful market analysis from noise. For the day’s headlines behind the reading, see crypto news today and Bitcoin news today.

FAQ

What is the crypto fear and greed index today?
As of November 2, 2026, Alternative.me’s Crypto Fear & Greed Index reads 37, in the Fear band, up from 34 a day earlier and 30 on October 30 and 31. CoinMarketCap’s separate index reads 36, also Fear. Over the past 12 months, Alternative.me’s reading has ranged from 5 in February to 78 in September. A new score is published every day.

Why do Alternative.me and CoinMarketCap show different fear and greed scores?
They use different inputs and different scales. Alternative.me blends Bitcoin volatility, momentum, social media, dominance and Google Trends, and labels 55 or higher as Greed. CoinMarketCap uses top-10 coin momentum, options implied volatility, put/call ratios, stablecoin supply and its own search data, and starts Greed at 60. On October 22, 2026, they read 68 and 48.

What has the crypto fear and greed index been in 2026?
Through November 2, 2026, Alternative.me’s index averaged 33, against 49 in 2025. Extreme Fear made up 137 of 306 daily readings, with lows of 5 on February 12 and 23. Sentiment turned in late August, the monthly average rose from 25 in July to 67 in September, and the index fell back into Fear after the Binance hack on October 29.

How is the crypto fear and greed index calculated?
Alternative.me blends six Bitcoin-focused inputs. Volatility and market momentum with volume each count for 25%, comparing current readings with their 30-day and 90-day averages. Social media activity on X and surveys count for 15% each, though surveys are currently paused. Bitcoin dominance and Google Trends search data account for 10% each, and a rising Bitcoin dominance is read as fear, a falling one as greed.

Is there a fear and greed index for Ethereum?
Not from Alternative.me: its widely cited index currently tracks Bitcoin only, so it can read fear while Ether is rallying, or the reverse. CoinMarketCap’s index includes Ethereum data, using implied volatility and options put/call ratios for both BTC and ETH. For a dedicated Ethereum score, CFGI publishes per-asset readings for hundreds of crypto and stock assets, including Ether, refreshed every 15 minutes.

What is the lowest the crypto fear and greed index has ever been?
The lowest reading on the scale is 5, first recorded in August 2019 and matched on February 12 and 23, 2026, after Bitcoin briefly dropped to $60,000 earlier that month. Every daily reading in February 2026 stayed in Extreme Fear. At the other end, the index hit 95 on January 6 and February 9, 2021, during Bitcoin’s run past $40,000. The past year’s high was 78.

Is the fear and greed index a good buy or sell signal?
Not on its own. The index describes current sentiment far better than it predicts the next move: CFGI reports its own index matched same-day market direction 79% of the time but next-day direction only 49%. Treat readings of 25 or lower and 76 or higher as prompts to check trend, volume and derivatives data. The index peaked at only 74 around Bitcoin’s October 2025 all-time high.

Is there a free API for the crypto fear and greed index?
Yes. Alternative.me’s /fng/ endpoint is free and needs no account or key for basic queries. The limit parameter sets how many daily readings come back, and limit=0 returns the full history. Each entry includes the score, its band label and a timestamp, and a format=csv option exists for spreadsheet work. CoinMarketCap also offers its own index through its API, which requires a key.
